What Is LED Tape Lighting?

by Bryan Pearson Webmaster

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been around since the 1960s and were originally used as electronic components.  Over the years, LED lighting has become more evolved and versatile lending itself well to landscape lighting as it requires less electricity to operate, has a longer lifespan and generates less heat.

What is LED Tape Lighting?

LED tape lighting is just what it sounds like, basically a length of tape with LED lights.  LED tape is a flexible circuit board with attached LED chips that can be cut to size.  The chips are dots of light spaced approximately every 5/8 inch; they come in different levels of brightness.

LED tape is flat and easily fits into tight spaces.  The tape has a self-adhesive backing, making them easy to install almost anywhere.  LED tape lighting comes in various colors, including the red, green, blue (RGB) series that allows the changing and selecting of different colors.

What is LED Rope Lighting?

LED rope lighting is similar to tape lighting in the fact that it is long strips of LED lights.  LED rope is a round plastic or rubber tube that houses LED chips, typically 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter.  Rope is not as bright as tape and tends to give off a bluer light.

LED rope is tricky to maneuver in tight spaces and cannot be bent at 90 degrees without breaking the wires inside.  The rope is generally more expensive than the LED tape and does not offer the RGB series option.

Lighting Applications

Both the LED tape and LED rope are suitable for dry or damp locations and come in waterproof options too.  The LED tape is more applicable to smaller areas, whereas the LED rope is better suited for longer projects.  The tape and rope come in varying colors, brightness’s as well as lengths.  Some work well for areas that need a bright accent light with a small amount of task lighting, and some produce a larger amount of task lighting, going beyond simply creating ambience.

The LED lighting is perfect for use in landscape lighting in Plano TX because of its ability to withstand moisture.  It can be used to add accents to patio railings and outline patio edges.  Mounting strips under the edge of steps or along walkways will increase safety and adding them underneath outdoor kitchen counter areas will add drama to the work area.  They can be used more decoratively with color and attached to a gazebo, arbor, the pool side, or even in a water feature.  Using the RGB series option will allow the homeowner to change colors to match the holidays or seasons.

The same LED lighting can be used indoors as well.  The most common application is under-cabinet lighting.  It provides accent lighting as well as task lighting.  Some brands even offer dimmers where the brightness can be controlled and changed.  Other indoor uses include accents under shelves, in entertainment areas, and in recessed ceilings to replace fluorescent lighting.

Whether it’s LED tape or rope, the options are numerous, all that is needed is a little vision and creativity to make your outdoors shine.  Many west Plano sprinkler repair companies also offer landscape lighting services in Plano, TX.  Contact us today and we can discuss different options and ideas for your property.
