Since LC connector was developed by Lucent, they obviously nicknamed it LC connector as a acronym for Lucent Connector (although actually it has never been called Lucent Connector).

LC connector is a small form-factor fiber connector which uses a 1.25mm diameter ferrule instead of the more legacy 2.5mm ferrule used on FC, ST, SMA and SC. LC is a high performance connector especially designed for single mode applications.

LC connector uses a standard RJ-45 telephone plug housing and ceramic ferrule. It is available in simplex and duplex configurations for CATV, LAN, MAN and WAN applications.

LC was developed by Lucent to meet the growing demand for small, high-density fiber optic connectivity on equipment bays, in distribution panels, and on wall plates.

It is actually based on two tried-and-true technologies - the industry-standard RJ-45 telephone plug interface and ceramic ferrule technology. RJ-45 housing provides a reliable and robust latching mechanism.

LC connector is available in industry-standard beige and blue colors and can accommodate 900um tight buffered fiber, 1.6mm fiber cable, 2.4mm fiber cable and 2.9mm fiber cable.

The LC family of connectors includes a stand-alone simplex design, a "behind the wall" (BTW) connector, and the duplex connector available in both single mode and multimode tolerances, all designed using the RJ-style latch.

The BTW connector is the smallest of the LC family and designed as a field or board mountable connector using 900um buffered fiber and in some cases has a slightly extended latch for extraction purposes.

The duplex LC connector has a modified body to accept the duplexing clip that joins the two connector bodies together and actuates the two latches as one.

The duplex clip has variations depending on the vendor. Some duplex clips are a solid one-piece design and must be placed on the cable prior to connector termination. While other designs have slots built into each side to allow the clip to be installed after connectorization.

So actually all LC connector are not created equal and depending on style and manufacturer's preference there may be attributes that make one connector more suitable for a specific application than another.
