And when we talk of Kamma matrimony specifically, that too is filled with fun, laughter and happily ever after. Kamma matrimony is also filled with a number of rites and rituals.

Wedding is the day when all your distant relatives come to your place to shower their blessings as you start the new phase of your life. At Kamma wedding, people get ready with all authentic dressing and they feel proud to be a part of such a culturally rich wedding. It is also to be noted here that Kammas do believe in horoscope matching and thus, things would move further only if the horoscopes of both the bride and groom have matched perfectly. If the case is otherwise, the Kammas don’t take the relationship forward at all.

Right from the Muhurtham, Pellikuthuru, Kashi Yatra to Vira Gudi Mokaddam and Kanyaadaan, every custom in this wedding is worth remembering and is filled with lots of fun. Now, let us look at the wedding rituals observed in Kamma Matrimonial or Kamma Matrimony as you can say. Scroll down and take a look!

How the Kamma matches are made?
Since there have been a lot of changes in many traditional rituals, in Kamma weddings the search for perfect Kamma matches has changed over the period. Earlier, people used to check the background of their relatives of known people and after getting in touch with them, the right matches were finalized. But now with digitalization and the presence of many Matrimonial Sites, the task has become easy and fast.

And this is not it, many Matrimonial sites have been useful to the people who are living in abroad. The emergence of Kamma matrimonial portals have proved to be beneficial to everyone who have reduced their dependency on the word of mouth referrals or for that matter, marriage brokers and other such old school mediums.

1. Muhurtham
First and foremost ritual in a Kamma Matrimonial is the muhurtham i.e., the date and time of the wedding. After opting for the perfect Kammas that matches the best, the next thing is to decide when and at what time to walk down the aisle or rather we should say, Shaadi. When the date and time of the wedding are decided, it is known as Muhurtham.

2. Pellikuthuru
Have you ever heard of the fun and masti bhari haldi ceremony? Pellikuthuru is the ritual that is close to the Haldi ceremony in Hindu marriage. In this ritual, turmeric and oil paste is made and is applied to the Kamma bridegroom by all the members of the family. After this ceremony of Kerala Matrimonial is over, they take a bath in clean water and wear good clothes. All the fun-filled pictures of the soon to be life partners are taken with all the Dhoom-dhaam along with the near and dear ones.

3. Kashi Yatra
Kashi Yatra is one of the most interesting rituals in the Kamma matrimony. In this ritual, the Telugu Kamma groom pretends to be going as a priest to Kashi and that’s when the brother of the Kamma bride has to stop him. After a while and all the fun along with the rusna-manana, the groom finally agrees to get married. This is one of the most fun-filled and important rituals of the Kamma Matrimony. People who witness Kamma Matrimony enjoy this particular ritual like crazy as it involves a lot of fun and masti.

4. Snathakam
Snathakam is one of the rituals that take place at the groom’s house. Snathakam is a ritual wherein the groom is given Janev. We are sure that many of you would have heard this term earlier as well. But to give clarity to the ones who don’t know, Janev is a holy thread in silver, which the groom is supposed to wear. This marks as an indication of his change in responsibilities from being a bachelor to being a married man. As he is going to take the responsibility of his life partner, he is given the realization of the same.

5. Mangala Snanam
Well, well, well, Mangala Snanam is one ritual in which both the Kamma Bride and the Kamma Groom take part at their respective houses. In Mangala Snanam, both the groom and the bride at their respective place have to take bath in the holy water and right after that, they have to appear for an aarti, wherein both of them have to take part with all their heart. So, basically, this is the ritual which is meant to purify the bridegroom and prepare them for the further main ceremony of the Shaadi.

6. Vira Gudi Mokaddam
After the mangala sananam ceremony in Kamma Matrimonial, the bridegroom is taken forward to their respective temples in order to worship their heroes. At a given place, a pandal (temporary roof or camp is erected along with three-five bricks placed below the same. This is what represents the heroes. The bricks are then smeared with turmeric paste along with some other puja samagris or materials. Later a coconut is broken and incense sticks and camphor are burned as part of their rites and rituals.

7. Kanyadaanam
And then comes the Kanyadaan ceremony in Kamma Matrimony, which is one of the fun wedding rituals of Kamma Shaadi. Kanyadaanam is one very emotional ritual in a Kamma matrimony. In Kanyadaan, first, if all, the maternal uncle of the bride (who is also known as the mama or mama) carries her in a basket and takes her towards the mandap. Then the wedding rituals take place with all the mantras going on simultaneously. The bride is all decked up in her silk saree wearing gold jewelry as well. The bride carries a red pumpkin, betel leaves, sandalwood stick, coconut, as well as betel nuts as well while entering the main wedding venue where the mandap is erected.

Both the bride as well as a groom cannot see each other as they are separated by a curtain. After the ritual ends, the bride’s fathers wash the feet of the groom with water. It is the time when the groom is treated as God in a Kamma matrimonial.

The aforementioned are a few major rites and rituals that take place in Kerala Matrimonial or Kamma matrimony. It is also to be noted here that in Telugu Kamma Marriage, both the bride and groom’s families are said to be involved spiritually, physically and mentally. The bride carries a red pumpkin, betel leaves, sandalwood stick, coconut, and betel nuts while entering the mandap.
