by Dr Vikram Chauhan Doctor

Abstract

Eyes are one of the precious gifts given by God. This is because if a person is blind then he is not able to see the experience of life and the beauty of nature. Eyesight is one of our five important senses, most of the proportion we discern comes through our sense of light. While protecting our eyes, we are able to reduce the possibility of vision loss, blindness and various top mentioned eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, etc. It's our mind set that visiting a doctor for the rest of the body checkup is enough but the same is not for eyes, we neglect this precious gift of God. Taking care of the whole body by neglecting eyes is not enough as eyes are the windows of our body. It is one of the easiest examination sites in our body, so don’t neglect to visit your doctor on short intervals to avoid various eye diseases. Nowadays people are suffering from a lot of eye diseases and today among all these we are going to discuss a disease named Hyphema. In this article we will discuss all about Hyphema and how it can be treated in Ayurveda.

Introduction

Hyphema is referred to as accumulation of RBCs (Red Blood Cells) in the anterior chamber of the eye basically between cornea and iris. If there is an accumulation of blood in small amounts that is just visible on microscopic examination, it is called microhyphema. Most of the patients have some history that leads to hyphema. Hyphema may lead to partial or complete vision loss in particular eyes. This is some brief introduction about Hyphema, now let’s discuss Hyphema in detail with its causes, symptoms and Ayurvedic management.

Hyphema

SOME FACTS ABOUT HYPHEMA

Below are some of the facts about Hyphema that one must know:

  • Annual incidence is about 12 per 100,000 population.
  • Males get 3 to 5 times more affected than females.
  • 70% of hyphema (traumatic type) occurs in children.
  • If it is left untreated it may lead to permanent vision loss.

CAUSES

Mostly Hyphema caused by sports injuries especially by small balls such as raquet balls which may lead to serious eye problems. The other cause of Hyphema is some serious eye conditions. Let us see what are some common sports activities and medical conditions that may cause Hyphema.

Sports injuries leading to Hyphema:

  • Blood thinning medicines such as anticoagulants
  • After eye surgery
  • Problem in blood clotting process
  • Eye infections such as herpes virus
  • Cancer of eye (rare)

SYMPTOMS

Following are some of the common symptoms of Hyphema

  • Blood inside the affected eye
  • Pain in eye
  • Blurry vision
  • Distorted vision
  • Sensitivity to light

DIAGNOSIS

First of all a complete medical history is to be done if there is a recent history of trauma or whether you are having any other eye medical condition. Then a physical examination of eye area is done which includes the following examinations:

  • Eye pressure check
  • Comprehensive eye examination to evaluate ability to see
  • Slit lamp examination to see the inside of eye
  • CT Scan to examine any fracture of the socket (orbit)

AYURVEDIC VIEW

As per Ayurveda there is no specific correlation of Hyphema. As we read earlier it occurs by trauma and secondary to some medical condition. So the Hyphema which is caused by trauma is correlated as per Ayurveda to abhighata. Abhighat in the netra (eye) region may lead to vitiation of rakta and then lead to its accumulation as there is a rupture of blood vessels due to abhighata. The second cause as we read is secondary to any medical condition so as per Ayurveda the condition of the eye which leads to rakta and pitta dosha vitiation and cause rupture of blood vessels may lead to accumulation of blood in the anterior chamber.
