What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.
CBD has significant medical benefits according to multiple scientific and medical sources. Since 2013, the National Institutes of Health service (PubMed) has included in its index more than 1,100 studies on CBD. Furthermore, cannabidiol does not produce a psychoactive effect, but can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC.
CBD VS THC: THE ISSUE OF PSYCHOACTIVITY
After THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol), cannabinol or CBD is the most studied natural cannabinoid with the most therapeutic potential. Among all cannabinoid compounds, generally, CBD and THC (and also cannabinol or CBN) are those that are present in higher concentrations. Cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol share a special interdependent relationship and work together to mutually increase their therapeutic benefits. As we have already indicated, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound, while THC is, and therefore can produce euphoric or dysphoric effects. A patient's sensitivity to THC is a key factor in determining the proper dose and proportions for treatment with a high CBD content. As we have already said, CBD can decrease or neutralize the psychoactivity of THC, so a higher ratio of CBD to THC means fewer effects on the brain.
There are two types of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in cells throughout the human body, although they are more abundant in the brain and immune system. When a person takes CBD, cannabinoid receptors are activated and bound on the surface of cells. Research shows that when we provide non-toxic cannabinoids to our endocannabinoid system (SEC), we are not creating a habit but a healthier endocannabinoid system.
It is very important to keep in mind that each variety has a different
proportion of these active ingredients, which makes each one more or less suitable for different needs. For example, marijuana grown for recreational purposes typically contains more THC than CBD. However, by using selective breeding techniques, cannabis breeders have managed to create strains with high levels of CBD and THC levels close to zero. These varieties are rare but have become very popular in recent years. However, it should be mentioned that all cannabis varieties have some amount of CBD, however small, so all varieties will have some medicinal benefit.
CBD is usually found in percentages ranging from 0.6% to 1%. The varieties that contain less than 0.6% have weak effects and those that exceed 1% are very strong. Although it may seem like a relatively small difference, it is all that is needed. Still, a higher percentage can be achieved, but these highly potent varieties (which even exceed 6%) are not very frequent. The percentage indicates how much CBD is present compared to the other elements that make up cannabis.
There is no doubt that the CBD is causing the debate around the use of cannabis as medicine to change rapidly. In recent times, attention has shifted to the CBD for good reason. Doctors and healthcare professionals generally prefer treatments with minimal side effects and cannot overlook certain side effects of THC, so CBD does not present that problem. In 2003, the United States government obtained a patent for the medical use of cannabidiol, or CBD. In a 2011 study published in Current Drug Safety, it is concluded that CBD "does not interfere with psychomotor or psychological functions." The authors add that several more studies suggest that CBD "is well tolerated and safe," even at high doses.
