What is an epoxy powder coating and what is its purpose?

by Barkha Pahuja SEO/Writer

One of the most environmentally-friendly methods of protective coating is epoxy Powder coating, which is a product of natural and organic resin. Resin, which often comes from coniferous trees and plants, is valued for its ability to synthesize chemically and turn into useful products like varnish, adhesives, perfumes, and epoxy coating, among others.

Epoxy Powder Coating Manufacturers uses the process of polymerization for its resin. The organic epoxy resin is combined with catalyzing agents, fillers, and pigments to turn into a dry powder which, when heated, melts and causes a reaction that allows the formation of complex cross-linked polymers.

Why Epoxy Powder Coating is in demand?

Demand for coating using this powder started to rise because of the reduced solvent emitting into the atmosphere.

Coating applicators started to grow as liquid coating applicators were forced to either switch from liquid coating to coating with powder or install a production line to be able to apply both liquid and powder-based coating on the needs of their customers.

The application requires heat or an industrial oven to cure.

If there is now a surface imperfection, dent, void, crack, rough weld that needs to be patched, smoothed overfilled in. Two-part epoxies could not be used because epoxies will start to shrink, pop out, outgas, bubble, blister when exposed to the required baking temperatures needed to flow and cure.

Epoxy fillers, metal patching compounds have to be a single component, epoxy free, heat resistant, easy to apply and will accept the powder process.

The Process of Epoxy Powder Coating

Epoxy coating plants usually coat bars that are pre-cut in straight lengths of around 40 to 60 feet. The bars are then cut and bent to meet project stipulation. The bars are passed through a conveyor system and subjected to the epoxy coating process.

Next step is the blast cleaning which involves the release of compressed air on to the steel surface, propelling abrasives like steel grit, garnet, or coal slag to hit the surface, resulting to pockmarks that cleanse and roughens the surface.

After the rebars have been blast-cleaned, they are heated and sprayed with dry epoxy powder. When the dry epoxy powder is ejected from spray nozzles they are imparted with electrical charges that are automatically attracted to the already grounded heated bars.

Different uses of the epoxy powder coating
• Useful for cast iron, cast aluminium, and cast steel due to its low volatility and water clean-up
• Metal cans and containers to reduce rusting. This helps to keeps canned vegetables safe.
• With their resistance to heat, they can be used in both automotive and industrial applications.
• White goods, such as washer and dryer, they are used as powder coatings
• Used to prevent corrosion in steel pipes and fittings
• Can be used as primers for automotive and marine paints to reduce the possibility of corrosion
• Provide a touch protective coating on metal substances
• Epoxy resins are used for high performance and decorative applications

Qualities of a good Epoxy Powder Coating Manufacturer

• Timely delivery anywhere in the country
• Having an expert team to support the client
• Pricing policy must be transparent for all the clients
• Using the best quality material for the final product
