What is a Psychometric Test?

by Mukesh Nath Blogger

Psychometrics is the name of a field that deals with the objective measurement of skills and knowledge, abilities and attitudes, personality traits, and educational achievement of individuals. The measurement is done with the help of a psychometric test. This test can be very crucial for a student in helping them decide what subjects and career paths should be pursued further.

In a fast-paced world like ours, students are stuck in situations where they have several career options. Such situations tend to make a student feel lost and confused. It is very crucial to realize what the individual student’s aptitude is built for, from a very young age. The psychometric test consists of questions designed specifically to test the aptitude of the student. There is no passing or failing in these tests. These results are unique to every individual. The ideal time to start taking these tests is 10th standard. This is the time a student is required to choose the subjects he/she would want to pursue. The normal confusions in a student’s mind in these times are:

  • Selecting a stream and subjects to be pursued

  • About their skills

  • About the career path

The test may help the student in choosing the right subjects. Other advantages of the psychometric test are:

  1. Saves the candidate’s time and money

Candidates invest their time and money in a career path that does not match with their aptitude. The reasons are numerous, for example, peer pressure, confusion or lack of clarity and various others. A candidate who could have placed in the field which matches their aptitude tends to perform poorly in a different career path. At most times, it is late when the realization comes around.

  1. Helps in understanding skills and competency

A student needs to realize his/her potential and take appropriate measures to build them. A psychometric test makes the process a lot easier. In a competitive world like today’s, it is important to be competent in the field, as much as being skillful. The tests are instrumental in estimating the same.

  1. Facilitates in evaluating a candidate’s potential

Students are often unsure about the scope of the subjects they are about to pursue. The tests measure the potential of the candidate, mainly.

Students need to have enough awareness and knowledge about such facilities that they can avail, to have a clear mind about the direction in which they want to start their endeavors.
