What is a Cable Harness? What Benefits They Provide in Electrical Applications?

by Nancy Jemes Blogger

You must have heard about cable harnesses being used in industrial applications. A cable harness, as the name suggests is an important part of electrical systems pertaining to different industrial and other functions.

What is a Cable Harness?
A cable harness, in simpler terms, is a group of wires bundled together. It is also known as wire harness, and in some aspects as wiring assembly, cable assembly or wiring loom. Usually it is made from thermoset or thermoplastic material which provides protection against exterior environmental dangers. A single cable or wire harness contains a bunch of multiple cables that can also have their own protective exterior sheaths. The cable harness can be small in size (wire group used in car or computer like auto engine wire harness), or large in size (used in aircrafts).

Application of Cable or Wire Harness
Electrical systems are used almost everywhere, from our home to commercial premises and more. Thus, cable or wire harness is also utilised across multiple industrial, commercial and other applications, as they are cost-effective electrical solution which works best to keep the electrical systems systematised and so are an important item for electrical contractors and engineers.

Some of the common examples of cable harness are – extension cord, and home appliances like TV, AC, washing machine and refrigerator also consists of wire harness. Some of the industries that use wiring harnesses are hi-tech electronics, consumer equipment, life sciences, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing equipment and more.

Benefits of Cable or Wire Harness

  • Protection from Moisture, Abrasion and Other External Factors
How would you feel about the condition, performance and longevity of wires if they are scattered and stretched along for long distances? In this situation, environmental factors would certainly have a say in distorting the conditions of the wires, which would lead to abrasion, moisture and other damages that will lead to increased repairing issues, low efficiency, and early replacement of wires. These factors and service vibrations can be efficiently managed when you have a cable harness that will ensure organised management of cables for increased efficiency and optimum performance.

  • Avoidance of Short-Circuit Issues
A mass of scattered wires is always vulnerable to cause short-circuits. With a wire harness this issue can be certainly avoided. This results in decrease in probability of sparks and consequent fires. Along with this, installing a harness is also easy, quick and much more efficient and highly organised for keeping the premise safe from any fire and such dangers.

Knowing how harness like motorcycle wire harness and other specific application and industry works and what benefits they provide, professional can make electrical systems much more organised with improved overall efficiency of power and energy.
