What Happens to a Texas Driver Who Drives Without Insurance?

by Whiteshark Media White Shark Media

Driving is expensive. You need to buy a car, which is obviously a big expense. You have to keep putting gas in it, which can be costly if you're driving a big truck or SUV. There are other expenses to calculate as well, like your tax, title, tag, registration, maintenance, repairs, and others. Some people pay all of this and feel they don’t have enough left over to get the auto insurance in Texas they’re supposed to have. So, what happens if you try to do this and drive without automotive insurance?

Although most drivers in Texas comply with the law and carry at least these legal minimums, many do not. Some estimates put the percentage of uninsured drivers in Texas at around 20%. Do not be one of them!

Your First Offense In the state of Texas, the first time you get caught driving without valid insurance, you will be cited and fined between $175 and $350. This may not seem like a lot, but this penalty is greater than what affordable auto insurance in Texas would be. You'll have to pay the fine and get insurance anway! If you don't, your consequences are about to get a lot worse.

Additional Offenses If you are caught driving without insurance an additional time, you will be fined between $350 and $1,000. Wow! Over a thousand dollars! Repeat offenders also risk having their license revoked and their vehicle impounded. If that happens, you will face a long expensive battle to get your license reinstated and your car back.

You Could be Sued. If you are the driver at fault for an accident, you are responsible for the cost of all resulting damage. This means everything, including damage to all vehicles involved and all medical costs for injuries to yourself, the other driver, and any passengers. If you don't have car insurance to pay the other driver what you owe them, you can bet that you'll find yourself in court with a judge who is not too happy to hear you caused an accident without the insurance you are legally mandated to have. That is going to be very costly, very quick!

So, what happens when you drive without insurance? Nothing good! If you take the risk and drive without car insurance, you're truly risking a lot. This is especially foolish since it is so easy to reach out to a great car insurance company and get affordable auto insurance in Texas. There are many different auto insurance companies, well beyond the big ones you see television commercials for. In fact, it is very likely that a company this big can’t work with you the way you need them to. It is quite possible that one of these lesser-known but still reputable companies can set you up with a policy you can easily pay each month and offers you the right coverage. You don’t need to drive without insurance any longer. This is what is best for everyone!
