What are the Different Types of Paint and What Do You Need to Know About Them?

by Concord Painting NYC Commercial Painting Company

Painting the interiors of your home can be a daunting task. Choosing a color, measuring the space, cleaning the area, and taking time off work are important considerations. That said, if you do your homework and plan ahead, your new paint job will go as smoothly as possible.

When it comes to planning for your interior paint job, there may be one thing you may overlook—the various types of paints and finishes available. While you may know what color and palette you want, you should also consider the finish and type of paint. While hiring expert interior painting services in NYC might lessen some stress, it is still important to educate yourself on your options.

Acrylic vs. Latex

Acrylic and latex paint are the two main types of paint to choose from. The key distinction between the two is in their bases—while acrylic paint is made from resins and pigment, latex is made from vinyl resin and pigments with a water base. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Acrylic

Acrylic paint is more sun- and water-resistant than latex paint. It is also more elastic, more durable, and adheres well to surfaces. However, there are certain disadvantages to consider. Acrylic paint is more difficult to clean, more expensive, and the chemicals in the paint are toxic and less “green” than latex.

Latex

Latex paint is less expensive and easier to find. It is also safer and delivers better coverage in fewer coats than acrylic paint. The major downside of using latex paints is that they are more prone to chipping, are less resistant to sun and water, and are not as flexible of a substance.

Different Types of Paint Finishes

Following the application of the first layer of acrylic or latex paint, the finishing coat is applied. There are several options available based on reflectiveness.

  • Matte

This paint has the least amount of sheen and is sometimes referred to as “flat” coats. The matte finish has the most coverage of any finish, but it is also the least durable and can be severely damaged during the cleaning process. This finish is best suited for low-traffic spaces like dining rooms or areas that will not come into contact with people, such as ceilings.

  • Eggshell

Eggshell paints mask imperfections and are more durable than flat paints since they have a slight sheen. Eggshell paint is ideal for medium-traffic spaces such as hallways, entryways, and living rooms.

  • Satin

Satin finishes are the most widely used interior paint finishes. This finish is ideal for high-traffic areas such as kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and family rooms due to its easy-to-clean surface.

Semi-Gloss and High-Gloss

Both of these finishes are glossy and reflective, long-lasting, and ideal for high-traffic areas of the home, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. High-gloss paints can also be used on doors, trim, cabinetry, and exterior features.
