What are the common signs of a Bad Thermostat?

by Tracktech Fasteners Auto parts store

The Thermostat is a simple yet essential component of a vehicle’s engine. It maintains a proper temperature under various conditions by controlling the flow of coolant to the engine. It works with the radiator and coolant to help keep your engine at an optimal temperature.

While working efficiently at its own pace as a component of the radiator system flow, the thermostat allows hot coolant to enter the radiator to prevent the engine from overheating.

Thus, if your vehicle is going through overheating issues, you should have inspected your thermostat by below mentioned common signs that indicate that your engine’s thermostat needs to be replaced.

Tracktech suggests several signs that indicate that your engine’s thermostat needs to be replaced, but a few of them are as follows:

1. High Temperature of Engine or Hot Engine

The basic and first sign of the bad thermostat is that your car meter displays the engine temperature high and gets overheated. However, If you get your car serviced, or if you refill your coolant on your own, this generally helps or fixes the overheating issue. Because the coolant is a liquid with a purpose to keep the engine cool.

But even after refilling the coolant, the problem remains the same or the temperature crawls back up quickly and stays high regardless of what you have done. You should check your thermostat. Moreover, high temperatures may also be due to a small leak in the coolant tank.

Thus, In order to make sure that the issue is with the thermostat, You have to look for quick spikes in the temperature. For an instance, if you start the car and find out that the engine temperature is cool but spikes very high within a few minutes or a short span of time, then it may be due to the thermostat.

2. Low Temperature of your engine or Cold Engine

Although it is one of the facts that if your engine is extremely hot then there might be an issue with your thermostat, and if your engine is extremely cold while running then it may also be a huge cause that your engine’s thermostat is not working well. Thus, A cold engine is also caused by a bad thermostat and can affect the operation of your car.

Because we have to understand that the main function of the thermostat is to allow hot coolant to move freely through to the radiator. In order to protect the engine from overheating, the thermostat helps the coolant cool down. If the thermostat remains open, however, the coolant will continuously move through regardless if it is hot or not. This will cause a cold engine, which can cause mechanical issues with the car. 3. Sudden changes in the temperature inside the car

Another symptom you might notice is that you often feel the air temperature inside your vehicle change suddenly. It might be possible that you notice the temperature changes drastically and drops to a very low temperature automatically and then suddenly spikes to a very high temperature.

Any change in air temperature that doesn’t reflect your current HVAC settings will often mean that something is wrong with the thermostat.

4. Radiator Hose is blown out

When the temperature builds inside the engine block, the pressure also builds. Although the cooling system is a pressurized system, it has a limited capacity to hold the pressure. So, If your engine’s temperature gets high and it becomes too hot, you may notice that the rubber component starts leaking or may also cause a burst. The same happens with Duramax head studs also.

Thus, If you experience that the radiator hose is blown out, then it is best to check your radiator cap also to make sure that it is the correct pressure for your vehicle. Apart from the rubber part, the radiator cap holding too much pressure will also show the same symptoms.
