Ways to Decrease Your Heating Bill in Winter

by John Cina seo

The winter season is drawing near. This means your heating bill is about to jump up considerably on account of the increase in the use of your home’s heating system. Most of us like to crank up the thermostat  in order to survive the cold temperatures during winter. However, this means that you would be using up a lot of extra energy which is going to show in your next heating bill. So, what can you do about it? Is there a way for you to decrease the heating bill without compromising your health? We’re happy to report that yes, there is. In fact, there are several. Here are a few of them.

Make Use of a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat can help you a great deal in saving on energy costs during the winter months.  This device allows you to set the thermostat at a particular temperature for a given amount of time. This gives you the opportunity to program the thermostat in such a manner that only increases the temperature when you need it most. For instance, you can set the thermostat to a lower setting when you are out of the home and when you go to bed. During those times, you don’t need the extra heat so there is no need for the thermostat to work at a higher setting. You can save almost 10-20% on your heating bill on a yearly basis by using a programmable thermostat.

Keep Windows and Doors Shut

Open windows and doors let heat escape out of your home. So, it is a good idea to keep them closed during winter. By keeping the windows and doors closed, you can ensure that the temperature maintained by the heater in the home will not waver too much. Your home’s temperature will remain constant throughout the day and your heater won’t have to work extra hard to maintain it. The more extra work that the heater puts in, the greater the amount of energy it would have to consume. Thus, by shutting the windows and doors of your home, you can keep yourself safe from the cold and also prevent the heating bill from getting any higher than it should be.

Invest in Insulation

Though shutting the openings of your home reduced the amount of heat escaping, heat can still  escape through crevices around shut windows and doors. You can stop this from happening by investing in insulation. Insulation can help seal the small cracks and crevices, keeping warm air inside. This way your home would retain heat better and you won’t have to use the heater consistently.
