Fraser Island is the biggest sand island of the world. It is located off the Queensland coast very close to Hervey Bay, about three hundred kilometres north of Brisbane. - Never think that you can have an open campfire on Fraser Island. Open campfires are prohibited in all areas except in Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service.
- About 124 kms long & 21 kms at its widest point, this island is the biggest sand island in the world. You can walk around it if you want. There are many walking tracks on Fraser Island ranging from six minutes to 5 days. Forest Lakes Hiking Trail takes 3-5 days to complete – it's a delightful way of experiencing the central as well as the southern forests & lakes of central high dunes. You can go for short walks or opt for a continuous trail.
- It is always advisable not to surf on the Fraser Island. There is a strong undertow and so the Surf Beach isn't patrolled. Sharks are quite often spotted on the ocean side of breakers.
Getting to Fraser Island
- You can get to Fraser Island only by 4WD vehicles. Since all the roads on this island are sand tracked, 4WDs need reasonable under-vehicle clearance. If you have your own vehicle you can take it or else you can hire one. You can even take off-road campers but caravans are however discouraged.
- 1, 2 or 3 day escorted 4WD tours regularly depart from Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay. Tours even depart from major Hervey Bay holiday apartments accommodation resorts.
- Permits are needed for camping & vehicles.
- Air charters & transfers to Fraser Island depart from the airport of Hervey Bay. Fixed-winged flights can land on 75 Mile Beach or grass airstrips around the island. Helicopters are able to land at the designated helipads across the island. Advance booking however needs to be made for air charters & transfers.
- Barge and ferry services operate from Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay to different points on Fraser Island on a regular basis. Private boats c\and jetty facilities are also available.
