Voltmeter: Types & Usage

Do you know how electricity flows through a conductor? The reason is the potential difference through it. Now the question is how this probable difference can be measured? It can be measured using a device scientifically known as voltmeter. 

Definition of Voltmeter:
Voltmeter is an instrument that is useful in measuring the potential difference between two electrical points or voltage difference in an electrical circuit. This electronic device has several practical applications. A voltmeter can easily decide how much a battery is charged. For example, if your car does not take a start, you go for checking its voltage to understand if it is an issue or not. 

Current v/s Voltage:
Voltage is measured by determining the potential difference per electrical unit charge. The definition of voltage can be stated as the total amount of energy confined in an electrical circuit. 
Current is determined by the rate of passing electric charges through a circuit. 
Voltmeters are designed in such a way that they can efficiently measure DC (direct current) or AC (alternating current) or RF (radio frequency) voltage. 

Types of voltmeter:
Voltmeters are of two types – analog and digital. Contacting any veteran voltmeter manufacturer in India you can easily purchase your desired type for the recommended application.
• Analog Voltmeter: It is the type of voltmeter that uses a scale. The movement of the scale and the voltage of the current are directly proportional. As the current grows, the more the scale moves. If an analog voltmeter is in perfectly calibrated condition, any amount of voltage can be accurately measured through it. Such measurements can be liquid flow, temperature or pressure. 
Any basic voltmeter of this category contains a galvanometer in sequence with high amount of resistance in it. The varieties of voltages which can be measured using a voltmeter can be determined by the combination of precision of resistance and the galvanometer. 
• Digital Voltmeter: This type of galvanometer is prepared for displaying the numeric value that a voltage of the current flow shows. Digital voltmeters are generally seen in the laboratories with a variation of ranges from 1000 – 3000 volts. The digital voltmeters which have commercial applications are available in multiple ranges, generally in the multiple of 10. For example, 0 – 10 volts, 0 – 1000 volts, etc. 

Oscilloscope:
Oscilloscope is an instrument that measures low voltages. Its vertical displacement resembles to any prompt voltage. This is also helpful for measuring peak to peak and also peak voltages in allRF and AC applications. 
Whereas, if there is a requirement for measuring great potential differences, voltmeters require involvement of insulators, wiring or heavy duty probes.

Usage of Voltmeter:
All the electrical connections made in a circuit should be correctly done otherwise the measuring instruments will show incorrect readings. 
The formula says, V = I / R where V is voltage, I is current and R is resistance. 
Hence, if the resistance is low, the voltmeter will extract greater current.
In general, a voltmeter is designed is such a way that it has higher resistance. And, thus, voltmeters remain parallelly connected in a circuit.
