Lake Wheeler Park, located just south of Raleigh, North Carolina sits on 150 acres of land with a massive 650 acres of lake. The man-made lake, which was constructed in 1956 under the guidance of the Army Corps of Engineers is quite a spectacle. It currently serves as the primary water source for the city of Raleigh and Wake County. The lake also diverts some of its water supply to the nearby Dempsey Benton Water Treatment Plant.

In addition to the important community impact the lake has, the park also offers various recreational amenities. Visitors can bring boats to drop into the lake from one of the many boat launches. Or, if they prefer, boat rentals are available for rent with the proper approval. The park offers all types of boat rentals including Jon boats, kayaks, and large pontoons.  Fishing rods and reels are also available for anglers of all ages.

The park also offers many amenities on land that include a beach volleyball court and a spacious conference room that has the capability to host over seventy patrons. There are also six free-standing pavilions that are available to rent for private parties. Sarah Eller of Wake County is a frequent visitor to the park and enjoys everything it has to offer. "Lake Wheeler Park is truly an amazing treasure to the people of Wake County. Not only does it serve as our primary water source but the kayaking and hiking adventures it affords are second to none."
