by Amanda Sutcliffe Travel Deals

A tiny state located on India's western coast, Goa is visited by large numbers of tourists annually. It is immensely popular among both international and domestic tourists for its sandy beaches, thrilling nightlife, and other fabulous attractions. The Indian National Commission on Population has given this exciting destination top ranking for its best quality of life. It has also been ranked for its impressive infrastructure. Among the most popular attractions you'll get to visit while exploring this part of India is Dudhsagar Falls.

Your cheap holidays to Goa would give you the opportunity to explore these majestic waterfalls, which cascade from a height of over 1,000 feet and provide an awe-inspiring sight for its visitors. The name 'Dudhsagar' literally translates as the 'sea of milk', which refers to the white, misty atmosphere created by the cascading waters. You'll get to witness these falls at the peak of their beauty if you visit during the monsoon season. It is located at a place called Sanguem and comes under the jurisdiction of the Forest department of Goa. It is a part of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to some interesting species of flora and fauna.

This wildlife sanctuary also houses some temples that date back to the 3rd century when this region was ruled by the Kadamba Dynasty. Your Goa holidays would give you the chance to visit Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary as well as Dudhsagar Falls either by road or by rail. You can embark on a trek to these waterfalls upon reaching the Kulem railway station. Another way to get to Dudhsagar Falls is by hiring a Jeep, but you'll still be required to walk a short distance for reaching the base of the falls. The name of these waterfalls also comes from an old legend. According to this legend, there was a beautiful princess who believed in the purity of heart, mind, and body.

She used to bathe every day in the lake situated close to her father's castle. After her bath, she and her maids would congregate on the lake's shores and she would consume a jug of milk. One day, a young and handsome prince who was passing through the woods stopped to have a look upon hearing the laughter and chatters of the women. The princess was embarrassed by her scanty attire and her maids poured the milk in a cascade before her to create a veil so that she could immediately wear her clothes while being hidden from the sight of the prince. Thus, the cascade of milk preserved her modesty and gave the waterfalls its name. You can take a day tour to these waterfalls during your Goa holidays during the period between May and September.

The source of these waterfalls is the Mandovi River, which flows through the Western Ghats and cascades down from the highest peaks located on the state's border with Karnataka. After cascading, the water forms a deep green pool at the base. Water from this pool proceeds to flow westward and finally joins the Arabian Sea. The Dudhsagar Falls is called 'Tambdi Surla' by some of the locals.

You can visit these waterfalls with your dear ones by booking any of the family holiday packages in Goa.
