Vacation Travelling: What You Need To Know When Renting A Car

by Dillon Patterson Article Publisher

It’s finally here: Your vacation! Instead of driving your car to your destination, you’ve decided to rent. But you have a nagging suspicion that you may not have thought about everything when it comes to renting a car.

Below are some of the best tips and hints to use for your car rental process based on common questions:

1.   How Does Renting a Car Work?

The process is actually very streamlined, especially among the major carriers. You’ll go to their approved car rental pick-up/drop-off location and check in. Then, you’ll be asked to take a “tour” of the car with a member of the car rental team. If you see any scratches, dents, etc., you should speak up so you aren’t charged later. Your agent will write down any car blemishes on your contract as proof that they existed before you got in the car.

You’ll be given a drop-off point and date. Be sure to bring back the car by the deadline, or you could incur extra fees. During drop-off, you may go through another inspection. Notice anything peculiar about the vehicle? Speak up as soon as possible, or call the car rental company so they make a note of it.

2.   How Far in Advance Should I Rent a Car?

Obviously, the more advance notice you can give the rental company, the better chance you have at snagging optimum rates. Sure, there may be last-minute deals, but you have to be willing to take a risk. Plus, if you rent your car too late, you might be limited to a certain type of vehicle or have to go with a different company.

3.   Which Car Rental Companies Should I Consider?

It’s up to you to determine which car rental companies you prefer. Some offer special discounts if you join their membership list (it’s usually free), giving you perks like upgrades or cash back. Be cautious about renting from a place with rates that seem too good to be true. A low-ball price could be a red flag.

4.   What Will I Need to Rent a Car?

Obviously, you’ll need to show proof that you’re a legal driver. Be sure to bring your driver’s license on vacation, along with another form of identification (e.g., your passport or Social Security card). You also need to be at least 25 to rent a vehicle, so if you’re age 21 to 24, expect to pay an additional fee. Those under 21 cannot usually rent.

5.   What Rental Car Insurance Do I Need?

When you get to the car rental location, you will be asked if you want to purchase extra car insurance. Whether you do or not is up to you. However, if your personal auto insurance does not extend coverage to rental cars, you should consider this option seriously. You don’t want to have to pay out of pocket if something happens during your vacation. Not sure if your car insurance will offer coverage on a rental car? Call your insurance carrier or your independent insurance agent to walk you through your personal policy.
