Uses of Fractional Distillation and Plug Flow Reactor

Fractional Distillation is a differentiating technique that is used for liquids that dissolve in each other. It is mainly used to separate the components of crude oil and to separate nitrogen and oxygen from liquid air. The mixture of two or more substances (liquids) is heated with different boiling points to a high temperature. It is usually done with high pressure stream and temperature is set to at around 1112 degrees Fahrenheit / 600 degrees Celsius thereafter the mixture is then ready for boiling, and form vapor (gases); many substances go into the vapor phase.

The vapor is then ready to enter the bottom of a long column (fractional distillation column) and that is filled with trays or plates. The trays have many calpac structures (like a loosened cap on a soda bottle) which allow the vapor to pass through. Now, as the vapor goes up through the trays in the column, it cools. When a substance in the vapor comes to a height where the temperature of the column is equal to that substance's boiling point, it condenses to form a liquid and thus the trays collect the various liquid fractions. Remember fractional distillation is useful for separating a mixture of substances with minimal differences in boiling points, and is the most important step in the refining process.
