by Yamuna Infrastructure Yamuna Power & Infrastructure Ltd.
Heat shrink tubing which is commonly called heat shrink also, is a shrinkable plastic tube that is used widely to insulate metal wires and provide protection with resistance and abrasion. Heat shrink tubing is versatile and is used by OEM’s to produce high volumes of different products. Heat shrink tubing and cables are also used for general electrical maintenance work for prevention of electric problems. These tubes work as wonderful tools for cable repairs and connections also. There are different types of heat shrinkable tubing to suit various performances and installations. In market, customizable products are also available to enhance product handling and installation efficiency. Major types of heat shrinkable tubing are as following -

Single wall tubing - This tubing insulates wires with a single layer of insulation material. This provides a strain relief insulation and electric protection

Dual wall tubing - Double wall heat shrinkable tubing consists two adjacent layers of an outer and an inner jacket. The inner jacket is made of encapsulant which melts during installation giving moisture protective insulation.

Heavy duty tubing - These tubings are designed with more resistant insulation material, these are suitable for enhanced toughness and durability.

Specialty tubing - These types of cables are designed for specific usage and features. The cables come in a long range of shrink ratio, sizes and materials.

Harnessing tubing - These types of cabling is manufactured for heavy industries like aeronautical and marine. They can withstand extreme environmental conditions.

Among others, dual wall heat shrinkable tubings are most commonly used ones because they are suitable for both high performance and minor cabling wires.
While looking for a particular heat shrink tubing, you must ensure some basic features before buying -

l Thickness of heat shrink material
l Shrink ratio
l Change in diameter after shrink
l Shrinkage temperature

It is essential to have the right tubing according to your usage because tubing can suffer due to high or low operating temperature if it’s not suitable for your usage. The shrink ratio of heat shrink cable commonly range from 2:1-6:1.

Some added advantages of heat shrinkable wall tubings are - they are able to repair cable splices, insulation damages and cuts, they relieve the unnecessary strain in cables and wires that can be dangerous too. They are a great protectors of electrical wiring from unwanted agents like moisture, UV light, corrosion, chemicals, oxidation etc.

You can also find best heat shrinkable dual wall tubing in India available online to get your heat shrink tubing customized according to your specific requirements.
