Not many tourist sites harbor a glorious past. Some resonate the disturbing times as well. And, Mary King’s Close clasps on a history of being a plague enveloped place. The close was forgotten in the dust of time, only to be rediscovered accidently by workmen digging in to the street. The plague referred to as the “Black Death” claimed a lot of lives and it was a disaster of the highest order back then. The whole area was cut off from the rest because the plague was particularly very bad in the Mary King’s Close. And, such down trodden times always breed a lot of hearsay. One of its versions states that the close was sealed, leaving thousands of people to die. On the contrary, town council took good care of all those infected by the plague, trying their best to save as many people as they could. Today, the site is open for public tours where reenactors unfold the dreaded past. Also, numerous ghost stories intrigue visitors. A cast-iron fountain and plaque marks the place in the premises of the castle that has been witness to the deaths of hundreds of women accused as witches. Scotland’s King James VI wanted to put an end to the devil powers and he perceived witchcraft to be the biggest cause of it. Hence, in a stride to end the satanic dominance, many women who were believed to possess the power of witchcraft were burnt to ashes between 15th and 18th century.
