Understanding the Life-Saving Benefits and Techniques of Open-Heart Surgery

by Dr. Sujay Shad Cardiac Surgeon

Open-heart surgery is an operating procedure in which an incision is made in the chest to allow access to the heart. It is used to repair or replace faulty heart valves, treat coronary artery disease, and correct congenital heart defects. Expert heart doctors perform this surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the best Heart Hospital in Delhi

It helps treat cardiac issues by allowing direct access to the heart through a chest opening. During open-heart surgery, the heart surgeon will perform a sternotomy, which involves cutting through the breastbone and extending the ribs. It treats several medical diseases, including heart failure, heart valve disease, arrhythmias, aneurysms, and coronary artery disease.

Why is open heart surgery needed?

Open-heart surgery is most typically used to treat patients with coronary artery disease, which may cause a heart attack later.

Other disorders that require heart surgery include:

  • Valve problems

  • Issues with the heart's main vessel

  • The use of a donor's heart to replace a damaged one.

Live Saving Benefits of Open-Heart Surgery

  • Repairs or replaces faulty heart valves

  • Improving the efficiency of the heart

  • Corrects blockages in the coronary arteries and also prevents heart attacks

  • Reduces symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath

  • Protect from further damage to heart tissue

  • Contribute to overall health and well-being.

Types of Open Heart Surgery

At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the following types of Open Heart Surgery in Delhi are performed:

  • CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting): This surgery bypasses blocked or restricted coronary arteries. A specialist chooses a blood vessel from another body part, typically the leg, to graft onto the blocked artery, allowing blood to flow freely to the heart.

  • Valve repair or replacement: Surgery to repair or replace damaged heart valves is performed. The specialist may repair or replace the valve with a mechanical or biological valve.

  • Aortic surgery: Aortic surgery involves replacing or repairing the aorta, which may be necessary in cases of aortic aneurysm, dissection, or stenosis.

  • Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Implantation: This surgical treatment involves placing a mechanical pump into the heart to help it pump blood throughout the body. This surgery is frequently performed on patients with severe heart failure who are awaiting or are not eligible for a heart transplant.

There Are Two Methods For Open-Heart Surgery

  • On-pump open-heart surgery: Many open-heart surgeries involve stopping the heart so the surgeon can conduct the procedure while it is still beating. During surgery, the patient will be connected to a cardiopulmonary bypass machine (heart-lung bypass machine), which will breathe and circulate blood. When the surgery is completed, the patient is taken off the machine, and the heart begins to beat again.

  • Off-pump open heart surgery: Off-pump open heart surgery is also known as beating heart surgery because the heart continues to win during the procedure. The patient will be ventilated throughout the procedure, but no cardiopulmonary bypass machine is required. The only open-heart procedure performed off-pump is coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).
