Understanding the Different Methods of Coloring Plastics

by Deepika Olive SEO Executive

Plastic has become a fundamental part of our daily lives. It serves a different purpose. We are surrounded by many plastic products, such as plastic bottles, stationery and food containers that are used regularly. Initially, these plastic products are not colored. They are nearly colorless. In order to produce plastic products in different colors, dyes such as pigments are added. Color plays an important part, as it gives life to plastics by creating an image. It also plays an integral part in identification. Through colors, it becomes easy to identify the products. Coloring plastics not only add color, but play a part in improving the functionality of products more directly.

Different systems of coloring provide different pros and cons, and generally the customers' preferences dictates how a particular form of plastic would be colored. Do you ever wonder how these plastics are colored? There are four different methods of coloring plastics. The most common methods will be discussed below.

  • Masterbatches: With the rapid industrial development and growing consumption of manufactured products, the masterbatch industry is gaining tremendous demand for coloring and imparting properties to plastic materials. Today, several plastic products or components extract color from masterbatches. It has now become a part and parcel of our daily lives. Masterbatch is the most popular form of coloring plastics that provides minimal waste and can be implemented in small quantities. Concentrated pigments are spread into the polymer carrier resin and then moulded. At this stage, to achieve the color hue or shade, the masterbatch is put into a natural resin and guided into the press at the desired amount. • Cube blends: Cube blends work with a natural polymer using a dry masterbatch mix. Salt and pepper combinations are also called Cube blends. Normally, this coloring method is performed when there is no metering equipment. It enables the user to have accurate control over the final production. Another advantage of cube blends is that if the polymer stayed solid; this suggests that the original properties are retained by cube blends.

  • Pre-colored resin: This method of coloring is easy and offers consistent performance. But compared to other coloring methods it is hard to achieve exact color specifications. Pre-colored resins are used by processors for their ease and fast-matching performance rates.

  • Dry colour: Plastic colorants in powder form are produced by mixing pigments with metal soaps. They are less expensive colorants because there is no trouble with production. However, they have several weak points in handling, such as scattering easily, dirtying machinery and materials, and difficulties in measurement.
