Commonly used plastic products
A commonly used acrylic is known as PMMA, and is used in products such as Plexiglas and Perspex. This product is a very tough, and is also resistant to weathering and UV light, which makes it extremely valuable as a form of glass replacement in skylights, external signs, aeroplane windows, and vehicle lights. One well-known example of the use of PMMA is in the design of the Houston astrodome's ceiling, which has a large number of plastic panels made from this acrylic material. However, there are also a range of other devices which also use acrylic, including using acrylic in medical devices. It can also be found in common domestic items such as shoes, plastic piping, and even in some types of chopping board. How acrylic is formed
The manufacture of acrylic begins with the basic monomer, or methyl methacrylate. This chemical is produced by mixing acetone with sodium cyanide, while the mixture is then combined with methylated spirits. This is the start of any acrylic plastics fabrications. Once the monomer is created, a catalyst such as peroxide is used. The catalyst does not form any part of the finished acrylic. Once the plastic is made, it can then be turned into acrylic sheets, or twisted into shapes such as tubes and pipes. It can also be turned into powders that can then be converted into acrylic by a fabricator. These methods can be used separately or in combination to produce the product you want.
