Understand the functioning of Supercharger and Turbocharger

by Digital Solution Expert Digital Solution Expert

Turbocharger is a component responsible for improving engine efficiency by increasing air intake (Oxygen) into the combustion chamber. The turbocharger's purpose is to compress more air flowing into the engine's cylinder in simpler terms. As the air is compressed, the more oxygen molecules come together, which means more mechanical power is generated and overall engine efficiency is improved.

Likewise, Superchargers are another critical component used to increase engine efficiency. Both of the components work differently that we will explain in this guide. Buyers can buy superchargers & Turbochargers online.

How turbocharger works

The turbocharger is basically made up of two sections that include the turbine and the compressor. The turbine consists of a turbine wheel and turbine housing. The turbine housing guides the exhaust gas into the turbine wheel, and the exhaust gas turns the turbine wheel.

Like the turbine, the compressor also consists of two major parts: compressor wheel and compressor housing. The compressor wheel is attached to the turbine with the help of a forged steel shaft. The high-velocity spinning draws in air and compresses it as the turbine turns the compressor wheel.

The compressor housing converts high velocity and low-pressure stream into a high pressure through a process called diffusion. Eventually, the compressed air is transferred into the engine, enabling the car engine to burn more fuel and produce more power.

Below are the Benefits of Turbocharger;

  • Turbocharger uses turbine and compressor to generate power
  • Turbocharger does not release power from the engine, no mechanical drag
  • Turbocharger is suitable for high displacement engines
  • Turbocharger uses expelled exhaust gases to drive the turbine

What is a supercharger, and how it work?

A supercharger is basically an air compressor that increases air pressure or air density from the internal combustion engine. This gives the engine more oxygen, allowing it to burn more fuel to function better and increase power output. Power is provided mechanically by belt, shaft, gear, or chain connected to the engine's crankshaft.

Another way to add power is to design a bigger engine, which is not a good idea. The bigger engine weighs more, costs more, and takes more effort to clean and maintain.

One more way to add power is to keep the normal-sized engine and pressurize more air into the combustion chamber. More air means more fuel is added for generating a forced horsepower. Installing the supercharger is the best way to get forced air induction.

Benefits of Supercharger

  • The power generated by the supercharger is instant.
  • Supercharger can provide power without lag.
  • Supercharger is easy to set-up and draw power from the engine.
  • Supercharger is suitable for combustion engines with small-displacement engines.

Both turbocharger and supercharger pressurizes the air intake to allow the engine to achieve more horsepower. But the difference between these two components is their source of energy. Supercharger is powered by a chain or belt drive from the engine's crankshaft. However, the turbocharger uses a turbine and compressor to generate power.

Both are significant aftermarket engine parts available online. Not only Superchargers & Turbochargers, but you can also buy Running Boards/Steps from the online stores, offering quality aftermarket car parts and accessories.
