Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and it commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the archangel Jibreel (A.S). It is a month when Muslims all over the world observe fast from dawn until sunset. The name of this holy month is derived from the Arabic word ‘ar-Ramad’ or ‘Ramida’, which means ‘scorching heat’ or ‘dryness’. The observance of fast is an obligation for all Muslims during this month, except for those suffering from an illness, menstruating women, the elderly, women in their pregnancy, the chronically ill, and women who need to breastfeed their children.

According to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had once asked a woman from Madinah why she had not gone for her Hajj. In her reply, she said that her husband had gone on the pilgrimage with one of their two camels and she needed the second one for carrying out the task of irrigating their land. Upon hearing this, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that an Umrah in the holy month of Ramadan was like performing the Hajj with him. One can understand the importance of Umrah in Ramadan from this narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).

The spiritual benefits associated with an Umrah in this holy month is one of the major reasons why numerous Muslims residing in the United Kingdom (UK) dream of embarking on a journey to Makkah for their lesser pilgrimage during this time of the year.
