Installing stone for your kitchen counter isn’t just the end of the job. You have to finish it too. The type of finish you choose for your counter has a big role to play in the overall design scheme of your kitchen or bathroom design.

In this article, we talk about two most popular surface finish options for countertops. Check out the following subheadings –

Polished Finish –

This is the most common type of surface finish option. It adds a glossy shine to your stone counter. You can create a classy, shiny, timeless, and elegant feel to your counter and interior with polished finish.

However, that is only true with white and light color stones.

With darker shades and the stone of black colors polished finish easily highlights dust and dirt. Even the strokes of mop are visible on polished black marble or granite stone counter. I am not saying that polished finish is bad idea for black stone tiles. I intend to mention that it requires careful cleaning and upkeep.

Cleaning polished stone tiles is simple. But you will need to take a few things into your consideration. For example: you have to avoid using chemicals and alkaline based cleansers. They can react with the stone and may cause discoloration or clouding on you counter.

Honed/Satin Finish –

Honed is the second most popular finish for kitchen counters. Honed finish is shiny, but not as shiny as polished finish. You get a low-sheen look and smooth surface with honed stone counters.

If you are looking for a modernistic appeal in your interior design, honed finish is what you should choose. It is more flat or uniform than polished finish is.

However, unlike polished stones it catches stains easily. So, you will need to be watchful for spills; they should be wiped and cleaned immediately as they happen. Here also, you do not have to use chemicals and alkaline cleansers on your stone counter; they can cause some serious damage to the stone.
