Ball bearings play an important role in our lives and have been known to man ever since he learnt to make things move. Today there are different kinds of bearings for various industries. Read further to know more…

Over the years, ball bearings have been used in number of applications starting from skateboards to aeroplanes. Their main function is to hold the thrust and radial loads.

In general, ball bearing is an instrument that helps in moving parts and reduces friction. It is a kind of rolling material, which uses balls to segregate the bearing races. The bearings are known for their unique construction and have the capabilities to hold them. They are also known as spherical balls and the purpose is to minimize the rotational friction.

The Structure of Ball Bearings

The ball bearings are known for their simple construction, which is nothing but a ball with a smooth and spherical metal surface. The ball bearing manufacturers say that not all loads put strength on ball bearings and the usage depends on the type of industries. The loads are mainly of two types radial and thrust. The radial is the one which is used in a pulley and simply puts the load on the bearing in a manner which makes the bearing to roll.

On the other hand, the thrust load is completely different and puts the stress on the load in an entirely different way. If the bearing is interchanged on its side and the subject applies force in that angle, this is known as thrust load. The best example to describe this is the support, which is used for a bar stool that is subject to thrust load.

Since it has already been discussed above that ball bearings are industry specific, so thrust ball bearings are the ones with flat or aligning seats. It depends on the shape of the outer ring seat. They are capable of holding the axial loads but not the radial loads. In single direction thrust ball bearings the machine brass cages and pressed steel cages are normally used.

Types of Ball Bearings

Let us discuss the features of thrust ball bearings. These are available in two different designs: single direction and double direction. To avoid any kind of misalignment both the designs are available in aligning seat washers and spherical aligning seats. Such ball bearings are of high-qualities, which enable smooth and quiet operation. Some important factors should be taken into consideration while selecting these ball bearings. These must be kept in matched sets and generally they are composed of two washers and are typically caged.

Another kind of bearings are the tapered roller bearings, which use conical rollers and are capable of taking high radial loads and axial load in one direction. They also come in pairs and resemble the single–row angular contact ball bearings. The tapered roller bearings importers manufacture customized engineered surfaces to enhance the performance of such bearings in demanding conditions.

There is certainly no denying that ball bearings have an important role in various industries. They are used in aircrafts, precision medical equipments and automobiles etc.
