Types and uses of Admixtures in Concrete

Chemicals added during preparing a concrete mix for enhancing some specific properties like durability, strength and workability of the concrete in various conditions is called concrete admixtures. These mixing substances might be natural or some manufactured chemicals. • The mineral admixtures and the weaker calcium hydroxide which are released while hydration of cement, shows a chemical reaction, forming stronger calcium silicate hydrates.

• These minerals help in refining the pore structure, improves the durability and reduce the permeability of concrete structures.

• Mineral admixtures also help to reduce the generated during hydration of concrete.

Admixtures for concrete supplier deals with the mass of cement, where the fly ash is present within the range of 15 per cent to 35 per cent and the slag constituent within 25 to 70 per cent. In a mix of cement content, the Metakaolin and Silica fume is generally added in a ratio of 5 to 10 per cent.

There are about five specific classes of chemical admixture: water-reducing, air entering, accelerating, retarding and plasticisers.

 

Air Entering Admixture: This admixture is used purposely for entering microscopic air bubbles within the concrete mix.

Water Reducing Admixture: As the name goes, this admixture is used for minimising the water content by 5 to 10 per cent in a concrete mix. After using a chemical admixture of this category, the concrete mix would need less water to attain the state of the required slump. Through this, a concrete mix of higher strength can be achieved without adding further cement.

 

Accelerating Admixtures: This helps to enhance the rate of initial strength development. These admixtures are appropriate for using in cold weather, as it lowers the time needed for proper protection and curing.

 

Retarding Admixtures: This class of concrete admixture is required to slow down the setting rate of concrete. The retarding admixture is ideal for being used in a hot climate for the heat in temperature leads to hardening the concrete faster.

 

Superplasticizers: This admixture also results in reducing water by 12 to 30 per cent. Depending on the brand and dosage, this effect lasts for 30 to 60 minutes. The superplasticizer can be added to concrete with low to normal slump and a ratio of water and cement to make concrete with high slump flow. The calculation of superplasticiser is expressed as a percentage. It is calculated by the volume or weight of the cement.
