Two Midlands NHS Hospitals Open Vape Shops To Help Combat Smoking

We’ve always been big fans here at £1 Vape of the various efforts made by public health bodies to lower smoking, not least by recommending the use of e-cigarettes instead. So, it certainly interested us to read recently that vape shops have now opened on the sites of two NHS hospitals in the Midlands, selling e-cigarettes to patients and visitors.

As reported by The Guardian and other newspapers, the decision to allow the opening of the outlets at Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich and City Hospital in Birmingham was made by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, which has also introduced £50 fines for those caught smoking.

“A public health necessity”

Trust medical director Dr David Carruthers said: “The Trust’s board, and our clinical leaders, are united in the view that smoking kills. Given that simple truth, we can no longer support smoking on our sites, even in shelters or cars.

“Every alternative is available and we ask visitors and patients to work with us to enforce these changes. Giving up smoking saves you money and saves your health. No more passive smoking on our sites is a public health necessity.”

Such measures would certainly seem to back Public Health England’s (PHE) finding that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking – and we hope that steps like this across English hospitals will go a long way to helping to reduce Britain’s already record-low smoking rates of less than 15%.

Indeed, PHE has already said that all trusts should go smoke-free, although a third of them have not yet set a date.
