Trekking Nepal in March

The month of March is the winter season in Nepal. But it is warmer than December and January. If you are planning a trip to Nepal in March, consider starting your journey after mid-March.

After mid-March, winter starts giving way to the warmth of spring. Warmer days make your trip more comfortable. And spring is the second-best season for visit Nepal either for a trek or any other activities like mountain biking, city tours, and more.

All the trekking trails remain open during March. It is the best time to visit Nepal to avoid the seasonal crowd of spring in Nepal.

Weather Conditions

Since its winter month, you can feel colder nights and warmers days. But the cold temperature of March is bearable than December and January.

The temperature varies and different in the Terai region, mountain, and hilly regions. From March, the temperature can be very hot on Terai regions like Chitwan, but in Hilly and mountain regions like Kathmandu and Pokhara, you still feel cold.

During March, the temperatures of Kathmandu and Pokhara might range from 4°C to 19°C, which is tolerable. But mountains are still colder during the first half of March. So it is also month to visit lower altitude trekking regions.

The temperatures above 4,000 m range between 10°C to -5°C and lower at high altitudes above 5,000 meters. Don’t go on top altitude treks in March unless you are a pro hiker.

Despite this, you’ll witness the clear skies which offer breathtaking mountain views.

Almost it won’t rain in March, which means you can enjoy your day without raincoat an umbrellas.

Trekking trails

As mentioned earlier, high altitudes above 4,000 meters still receive snowfall in March, and you can also feel very cold so that experienced hikers should only attempt it.

But one can enjoy treks at lower elevations such as Poon Hill, Nagarkot, Tengboche, etc.

No doubt that all the trekking trails remain open during this month. From the Manaslu circuit to the Annapurna circuit, having 5,000 meters Passes also remains open for trekkers during this month. Still, it’s not recommended to trek high altitudes during the first half of March. You can start your trek from the last of March if your wish is to reach higher.

Otherwise, it is better to do short treks to the nearest hill stations like Langtang valley, Jomsom Muktinath, and more.

Low altitude trek in March means warm weather in the mountain and clear mountain views.

Nagarkot is the nearest hill station from Kathmandu valley. You can do Nagarkot Chisapani trek on all months. On this three days trek, you can see mountains including Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Lirung, Manaslu and Everest ranges.

Likewise, Poon Hill offers impressive views of mountains located in the Annapurna region. It is on the way to Annapurna base camp.

If your dream is to see Mount Everest from closer, you can reach Tengboche by taking a short flight to Lukla and walking for three days.

You have plenty of other options on taking a short trek such as Jomsom Muktinath, heading to Langtang regions to visit Helambu trail and Gosaikunda Lake, Mardi Himal of Annapurna etc.
