Treatment of Syringoma Through Ayurveda

Abstract

As we can see, the prevalence rate of benign growth in the body has been raised from last decade to a great height due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle. With the ongoing modernization and industrialization, we are making ourselves more prone towards such kinds of disorders. In this article we are also going to discuss a disease known as "syringoma". As modern systems of medicines use symptomatic approaches to deal with such disorders, Ayurveda has shown great results in such ailments as it uses basic principles of tridosha theory (principle energies in our body- vata, pitta and kapha). So let's start putting some rays of limelight in such disorder.

Introduction

Syringoma are known as benign (non cancerous) tumors of eccrine sweat ducts of sweat glands found all over the different parts of our body. Generally there are two types of glands in our body- first one is eccrine glands that open directly onto the surface of the skin, whereas the second type is apocrine glands that open into the hair follicles such as the scalp and armpits. So in syringoma the pathology is present in the sweat glands (eccrine). It is most commonly seen in females typically over the eyelids in majority of the cases, but in some cases also seen over the neck region, chest and genital area.

There are various types of syringoma such as eruptive, milia like, penile, scalp, acral and plaque type depending upon the site of origin. As per ayurveda we can correlate eruptive syringoma with "rakta pradoshaj vikar in svedo vaha srotas". The human body is made up of seven dhatus- rasa (fluid in the body), rakta (blood), mansa (muscle tissue), meda (fat), asthi (bone structure), majja (bone marrow), shukra (Semen). Rakta is considered as the second dhatu in our body, it gets vitiated due to presence of pathology in the blood containing channels.

Firstly let's discuss about svedo vaha srotas (channel carrying sweat)-

Srotas means transporting channels of dhatus that are undergoing transformation. Our body contains various types of srotas, one such type is svedovaha arotas. Svedo vaha srotas have their main residing seat in the medas dhatu (fat) and lomakupa (hair follicles).When there is vitiation of rakta dhatu (blood) in svedovaha srotas, it leads to the generation of disease in their associated structures.

Common Causes

These are the main factors (nidan as per ayurveda) that results in formation of an ailment.

• Formation of an obstruction in the sweat glands.
• Hereditary transfer.
• Hyper functioning of the sweat glands.
  
  

Due to the presence of certain genetic disorders such as

• Down syndrome
• Diabetes mellitus
• Marfan syndrome
  
  

According to Ayurveda: The main causes of swedavaha srotas dushti are as follow

• Overuse of physical workout
• Excess consumption of heat
• Improper intake of cold and warm things in an improper manner
• Krodha (anger)
• Shoak (grief)
• Bhaya (fear)

Signs/Symptoms

A symptom means the general complaints along with which patients present in front of the physician. Signs: It means what a physician notices himself by observing the patient's condition.

According to ayurveda: As per shloka (charak viman 5/8)

The main symptoms of svedavaha srotas dushti are as follow

• Asvednam (Loss of perspiration)
• Atisvednam (Excessive perspiration)
• Parushya (coarseness)
• Atisalakshnatam angasya (Over smoothness in the body parts)
• Paridaha (Extensive burning sensation)
• Lomaharsh (cold creeps)

Diagnosis

It includes the common diagnostic approaches used by a physician to identify the disease

1. Through proper clinical evaluation of the patient by using following below listed techniques

• Inspection (examining and assessing)
• Palpation (process of using hand to determine the size, firmness, location and abnormality of the disease)
• Auscultation (to listen internal organ sounds of the body by using stethoscope)
• Percussion (is a process of tapping on a surface to determine any pathology present in it)
  
  

2. Thorough and detailed history taking.

3. Ruling out family history

4. Skin biopsy

5. Histopathological study- Reveals presence of characteristic comma shaped tail of dilated ducts of sweat glands.

According to Ayurveda- The two most preferred diagnostic procedures used by a physician are as follow

Trividh pariksha(Group of 3 diagnostic procedures)

• Darshan- Diagnosis is made by visual examination of the symptoms.
• Sparshan- Physician uses tactile examination to evaluate whether skin is cold/hot
• Prashan- Physicians ask direct questions from the patient, to evaluate the root cause of the disease i.e. history taking.

Management

(A). Nidan Parivarjan Chikitsa (avoiding the root cause of disease) - This treatment modality had been given utmost importance in our ancient text

(B). Sanshodhan Chikitsa (Detoxification procedures)

1. Sheetal pradeh (to apply  herbal medicine powder (churan) with gentle hand over the body)
2. Virechan (therapeutic purgation) - best treatment modality to remove elevated pitta dosha along with the stool from anal route.
3. Raktamokshan (bloodletting) - to remove impurities from the blood with the help of –Shring [horn of animals] - in case of elevated vata dosha.
   
   

(C). Sanshaman Chikitsa (by medication) - In this we control the disease by subsiding dosha within the body itself by giving medications through the oral route.
