ABSTRACT

Reproductive health holds a huge importance in our body. There could be various disorders that may adversely affect the reproductive system of the body. There may be a variety of causes underlying these conditions. One such disease is orchitis. Orchitis is a diseased condition that targets the testicles in men. The patient may face various difficulties which may vary from patient to patient. This condition of orchitis will be discussed in detail along with its clinical features, symptoms, causes and ayurvedic aspect, etc. in the following article.

INTRODUCTION

Orchitis is the inflammation of testicles. The word orchitis is derived from two words orchis and itis. The term "Orchis" is derived from the Greek word for testicle. And the suffix "Itis" is derived from the Greek word which translates to inflammation or swelling. Therefore, orchitis literally translates to inflammation of the testicles. Orchitis is a disease which causes enlargement of the testicles. Testicles are a component of male reproductive system. In most men, there is a pair of testicles present in the body. The testicles are situated inside a sac-like structure known as scrotum.

The condition of orchitis may affect either one or both the testicles. This condition may be accompanied with pain and discomfort. Such enlargement causes severe pain that can last for 4-6 weeks at a stretch and even longer depending on the cause and severity of the condition. It may also affect fertility of the individual upto some extent. The orchitis is usually considered to be an STD (sexually transmitted disease). The causes behind the condition of orchitis will be discussed in the following article

Orchitis

CAUSES

There can be various causes underlying the condition of orchitis. But, in most of the cases, it is a result of infection. Orchitis can be caused by a variety of organisms. The most common causative organisms are of bacterial or viral origin. In some of the cases, the exact reason could not be determined. Bacterial orchitis may be associated with or a result of epididymitis. Almost 600000 males are victims of epididymitis every year. Apart from this, there could be other causative organisms too, depending on the condition of the patient and the surrounding environment. All these organisms may cause orchitis either directly or indirectly. These conditions are known as indirect causes of orchitis because they cannot cause the disease as such but instead only act as a predisposing factor. These causes will result in the presentation of disease and the associated symptoms are described as follows.

SYMPTOMS

The clinical presentation of the condition of orchitis will vary from patient to patient. The symptoms of orchitis will include pain in the testicle, swelling of the testicles, fever, and fatigue. Some patients may complain of heart palpitations and pain in various  regions of the body, usually headache. Many patients may not experience any manifestations at all. In most of the cases, a patient will be only diagnosed after a course of antibiotics has been administered.

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

The diagnosis of the condition of orchitis will include assessing various lab tests such as urine culture, blood tests, urinalysis, USG (ultrasonography), etc. In most of the cases, there is no definite treatment for orchitis. However, there are certain ways such as ice packs, NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory disease), etc. to alleviate the symptoms that may have been caused due to this condition that can be done at home by the patient himself. This was all about the modern perspective of orchitis. Let’s discuss the ayurvedic point of view on the condition of orchitis.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

The condition of orchitis can be correlated to the concept of kuranda roga in the ayurvedic texts. The kuranda roga somewhat indicates a similar scenario, considering the enlargement of the scrotum. This may affect either or both the structures i.e. testes and scrotum. The causative dosha underlying this scenario is believed to be the vitiated pitta. This is usually observed in children and kuranda is hence a pediatric disease. Orchitis can also be correlated with vrushna vridhi which translates to the enlargement of the testicles. There can be various ayurvedic formulations that will be beneficial for managing the condition of orchitis such as boswellia curcumin, punarnava capsules, etc. These formulations are described in detail as follows.
