Traveling Tips for Jews Headed to Europe

by Kosher River Cruise Kosher Tour Operator
Europe is a continent that is quite well known for its colorful history with the Jewish people. They have lived there for a little over two thousand years and have experienced years of great prosperity and of suffering.

Whether it’s through kosher Europe tours or solo traveling, it’s not a surprise that many Jews with European ancestry want to go there and learn more about their roots.

To make the trip a bit easier, it’s a good idea to keep these pointers in mind:

Check Your Documents and Requirements

The countries of Europe may all be close to each other, but that doesn’t mean traveling to another one is easy. One of the worst ways that your trip can be ruined is by not securing a visa beforehand.  Before booking anything, be sure to do some research and check out which countries require visas and which ones don’t. Keep all your documents safe in your suitcase.

Don’t Depend on Dollars

A common mistake by many tourists is that they use credit cards or US dollars to pay for everything. Yes, even in Europe. The locals don’t like it that much when they are given currency that they still have to take to the bank and exchange.

The best practice is to have some Euros with you at all times for buying and tipping. Exchange your cash at your bank, not at the ATM at the airport, as they usually don’t have desirable exchange rates.

Learn A Bit of Their Language

While we can’t be instant experts in a foreign language, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with some words and phrases. Should you ever get lost, they can be immensely helpful in getting you back on the right track.

Aside from “hello”, “goodbye”, “yes”, and “no”, you’ll want to learn the words for “where is”, “do you speak English”, “left” and “right”, and “how much is”.

Chabad Houses Can Help

Kosher establishments are definitely not uncommon in Europe. But in some countries, it can be difficult to find a place to eat that serves kosher meals.

This is where Chabad houses can help you. They can provide you with accommodations, kosher meals, and a place for religious services. And they don’t have these amenities themselves, they can point you in the right direction.

Officially, there are currently 465 Chabad centers found in 35 European nations, which is very helpful for Jews traveling to more than one country.

Guided Tours Can Help You Learn More

If soul searching is the goal of your vacation, most people would rather travel solo. But if you want to have a more educational experience, your best bet would be to join kosher Europe tours. The guides can give you more detailed lessons and insights into the heritage sites you visit that you might miss out on if you go on them alone.

Whatever you choose, may you have an exciting trip as you discover more about your Jewish heritage!
