Ditch the all-time crowded places and visit the following lesser-known jewels sitting silently in the bustling city :

1)       Fort Bassein

Fort Bassein is a formidable fort, now turned into a monument in Mumbai city. The fort is of national importance and has an important role related to the Portuguese invasion in Indian history. It is after the 'Treaty of Bassein' the Portuguese slowly expanded their rule in West-India. The rustic ruins retain their charm withstanding the course of nature. See the buildings in ruins, arches with worn out marks of designer carvings, gateways, etc. Several parts of the fort can also be seen covered by plants and minor wildlife inhabiting around it. Plan a visit to this fort and get acquainted with an interesting Indo-Portuguese history.

2)       Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum, established in 1855 is the oldest museum in Mumbai city. It is another unnoticed spot, exhibiting an impressive archaeological collection. Dr. Bhau Daji Lad was one of the members of a committee then formed for the construction of a new building for the museum under the leadership of George Buist. Later, the museum was renamed and opened in 1872. It displays timeless artifacts, including a 17th-century manuscript of Hatim Tai, historical photographs of Mumbai, clay models, silver and copperware and costumes. After exiting the museum, stop by the installation of the monolithic basalt elephant sculpture recovered from the sea, which originated from Elephanta Island.

3)       Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, widely famous as a Mount Mary Church, is a 100 year old Roman Catholic Basilica. The Basilica devoted to the Virgin Mary is located in Bandra, Mumbai. The birthday of the Virgin Mary is celebrated every year on the first Sunday after 8 September. Bandra Fair is the main attraction and people visit from far off places to enjoy the lively celebration.

4)        Global Vipassana Pagoda

The Global Vipassana Pagoda is the largest meditation hall in the world with a seating capacity of around 8,000 mediators. It was built as a tribute to Vipassana teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin. The massive structure is an emblem of peace and harmony. You will enjoy the visit as you witness the world's largest stone dome built without any supporting pillars. You can also join the Ten-day Vipassana meditation courses held free of cost at the Dhamma Pattana meditation centre, a part of this huge Pagoda complex.

5)         Haji Ali Shrine

It is a 600 year old mosque and the tomb of a Sufi Saint, built on an islet connected by a jutted causeway. The Haji Ali Dargah is highly revered and sees as many as 80,000 visitors per week swarming to take the blessings. It lies on the coast of Worli representing a quintessential Indo-Islamic architecture. You can visit this famous place on your interesting tour to the Dream City Mumbai.
