Travel Tips for New Moms

by Sophia Butler Writer

Traveling for the first time with a baby on board may seem like a daunting task. It is normal for new moms to feel a little worried about taking their baby on a long drive.  A fussy baby on board can be quite a handful.  It could be difficult for a new mom to calm her baby especially if she’s behind the steering wheel.

If you’re a new mom or know someone who is, take note that traveling with a baby can be fun and exciting if you make necessary preparations before you head out on the road.  Be a proactive mom by planning and organizing your trip ahead of time. Here are some tips to make your baby feel safe, happy and comfortable on your next road trip.

Prioritize your baby’s safety by researching and finding the right car seat. It is advisable to invest in a federally approved car seat.  Do not carry your baby on your lap when riding a car. For your baby’s safety, be reminded that children below one year old should always ride in a rear-facing car seat. Install the car seat properly by following the instruction manual.  The safest place to put the car seat is in the middle of the car. Never put a car seat in the front passenger seat especially if the vehicle has airbags.

Ensure that your baby is safe in the car seat before driving off.  Check if the seatbelt and tethers are secured properly to make sure that the car seat will not move while driving. Keep unused shoulder belts out of reach to avoid the risk of strangulation.

Keep your baby entertained on the road. Don’t forget to pack some entertainment when you take your baby on an extended drive. It’s a good idea to hit the road when your little one is fast asleep.  That will give you time to focus on your driving without worrying about your baby. However, be prepared when your baby wakes up.  Bring things to keep your child entertained such as teether, pacifier and favorite plush toy (preferably light toys made of safe fabric).  It is advisable to buy a pacifier clip with tether to prevent it from falling.  The pacifier clip may be easily attached to your child’s clothing or car seat strap.   You can also play your child’s favorite movie if your car is equipped with LCD screens (usually installed at the back of the head rest). It’s also a good idea to play baby-friendly tracks to keep your child in a good mood.

Bring milk and snacks. If your baby is formula-fed, you can bring baby bottles, water and milk powder so you can conveniently feed your baby on the road. There are disposable baby bottle liners that are ideal for travel use. You can bring snacks like baby puffs for older babies who already eat solid food. Don’t forget to pack a catch bib.

Bring a baby bag with extra clothes, towels, and diaper changing essentials. Never leave home without your bag.  Make sure you pack extra clothes, towels, tissues, first aid kit, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, travel changing pad, diapers, diaper ointment/cream, and trash bag.
