Traditional Dress of Assam

Dhoti and Gamosa: Men

Dhoti is one of the
popular dress of Assam. The people of Assam consider it as a traditional
attire just like any other state. However, it plays a significant part in their
dressing. Dhoti culture in Assam goes back to ancient times. The men of Assam
wear it regularly and carry it with ease. Even the younger generations wear the
Dhotis on special occasions. Along with Dhoti, they use a Gamosa, which is put
around the neck. The Gamosa completes the Assamese look. The white color cloth
with red embroidery on it serves as a Gamosa. It is worn to show respect.
The Mekhela Chador:
Women attire
Assam women wear Mekhela
Chador, which is their traditional attire. It looks so much like a saree and
the dealing is similar to. It is available in two-piece sets; while the upper
piece is called Chador, the lower piece is referred to as Mekhela. The Assamese
women adore wearing this traditional attire a lot.

Dimasa Tribe
Men and women of the
Dimasa Tribe wear different traditional attires. They generally wear Sgaopha or
a Phagri. While Sgaopha is green or yellow, it is also available in white with
red thread. They carry a small muffler with them, which is called Rigdo.
Coming to the women's
wear, they wear Rigu, a long piece of fabric. On the other hand Bathormai has a
single design on the entire cloth. People prefer to wear this cloth during
summers. Young women highly wear Rijamphain, which is a white piece of fabric.
Their way of dressing is quite subtle but they know to carry it in a graceful
manner.
Another tribe of Assam is
Bodo Tribe. People of this tribe wear Gamosa and shirts as a part of their
traditional attire.
