Surat’s name is derived from Saurashtra, which comprises the district of Valsad. It is the 9th largest city in the country and second most populated city in Gujarat, after Ahmedabad. This commercial city is famous for its diamonds and textiles, but not much is known about the tourism scenario of the city. Let’s have a look at what Surat has to offer to its visitors.  



The vibrant state of Gujarat has hundreds of colors, aroma and culture to see and Surat cannot be kept aloof from it. Situated on the south banks of the Tapti river, Surat embodies a wonderful aura of the rich past of the region. The vibe of the city is quite easy-going with strong passion for cultural showcase and food. If you’re looking for an amazing yet unusual place to explore, Surat can make for a perfect holiday. Surat being a port city, provides access to some amazing natural beaches overlooking the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea. Dumas beach is one such fine example of Surat’s beautiful coastline. Situated at a distance of some 18km from the city, the beach is perfect for going for a refreshing morning and evening walks and offers a picturesque scenery. Hajira beach is another fantastic beach located at a distance of 28 km from the city and a great place to unwind. The Suvali beach could become a perfect outing if you’re looking for some quiet time. Dandi beach on the other hand is a popular hangout in the city with its Chowpatty like appearance. Dandi, as you might be knowing, was popular for Mahatma Gandhi’s revolutionary salt walk. Another famous beach in the city is Ubharat, which is stroked with an array of date palms.



Apart from the beaches, Surat is also popular for its temples. The Ambika Niketan Temple is one of the most visited temples in the region. Located on the banks of river Tapti, this temple was built in the late sixties era. Dedicated to Goddess Ashtabhuja Ambika, the temple sees pilgrims from all over the country. Swaminarayan temple is another popular religious spot in Surat, belonging to the Swaminarayan Sect of Vaishnavism. The Chintamani Jain Temple is a 400 year-old ancient temple located near Rani lake and famous for its vegetable dye paintings of Acharya Hemchandra, and King Kumarpal.



Where there are historical wonders like these, the modern amusement like the Sardar Patel Museum and the Science Centre are some highly recommended places to visit. If interesting in some natural sight-seeing, then Vansda National Park will entice you with its amazing flora and fauna.
