Top Tips for Purchasing Australian Gluten Free Products

by Marta Jordan Writer
Shopping for Australian gluten free products can seem like a chore, but it doesn’t have to be. These days, coeliacs and those living a gluten-free lifestyle are spoilt for choice when it comes to the wide range of gluten free products that are available both in supermarkets and online.

With a little knowledge, removing gluten from your diet while still ensuring that you get a healthy amount of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients is a goal that can be readily achieved.

Look for ‘gluten free’ stickers and badges
Most gluten free products will advertise their gluten free status. This can take the form of stickers and badges that appear on the front of packaging or a Coeliac Australia Endorsement logo.

In order to meet the Australian Food Standard of ‘gluten free’ processed food undergoes a test, the result of which must be ‘no detectable gluten’. Australia has very strict regulations in this area, designed to help coeliacs live a healthy and safe lifestyle.

Read the fine print
There are some products that you might assume lack any trace of gluten. Certain snack foods, like chips and biscuits, may appear to be fine. However, it’s very important that you always read the fine print.

These processed foods can sometimes be manufactured using facilities that also produce gluten-based foods. While food manufacturers do everything that they can to ensure there is no cross-contamination between products, this cannot always be guaranteed. As such, many products will contain a disclaimer that goes along the lines of ‘this product was made at a facility that also processes foods containing gluten’.

If your allergy is not particularly severe, you may be happy taking such a risk. For those who are particularly susceptible to gluten, it would be best to steer clear of such products.

Know your food sources
Simply understanding what gluten is and what whole food sources contain the protein can help you make smart, nutritious decisions next time you are at the supermarket.

Gluten is the name given for a group of proteins typically found in wheat, rye, and barley. As such, fresh fruit such as apples and bananas will not contain gluten. Bread and pasta, on the other hand, typically contain the protein unless otherwise stated.

Try online
If you’ve recently been diagnosed as coeliac, you might be slightly disheartened by the range of gluten free products at your local supermarket. This will particularly be the case if you live in a rural area.

However, opting to buy your groceries online is a simple way that you can circumnavigate this problem. There is an extensive range of gluten free products out there — you just have to know where to look!

Plan ahead
Planning your grocery shopping is important for everyone, whether you are coeliac or not. Doing so is the best way of ensuring that you are enjoying a well-balanced diet and not relying on junk or fast-food because you have not considered whether you have everything you need to make dinner!

We are very lucky in that Australian gluten free products are of a very high standard. If you are coeliac or thinking about cutting gluten out of your diet, don’t be disheartened. You will still be able to enjoy all of your favourite meals, albeit with a few different ingredients!
