TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE BEST BOILER REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE SERVICE

by Abhinav G. Movie Enthusiast

Ensuring your boiler is properly maintained is one of the most important jobs you can do for your home. Failure to do so increases your chances of an expensive, and potentially dangerous, accident. Many see servicing your boiler as an optional extra when it is a vital requirement; recent tests by Nest Protect showed that UK homes have on average double the levels of the potentially deadly gas carbon monoxide than US homes and that one in ten British residents have never had their boiler checked.

Get it done regularly

At the very least, your boiler should be serviced once a year, costing around £72 each time, according to WHICH. For landlords, this is a legal requirement; however, as a tenant, you should make sure your landlord is aware of this, as not every landlord is.

Even if you’re getting a regular service, there’s a chance it’s not enough; one in three gas engineers surveyed by WHICH said they felt that the standards of boiler servicing, in general, were poor, or very poor. Worcester Bosch recently carried out some research that claimed the British boiler industry standards are the poorest in Europe, with already sub-par legal requirements often being missed. So ensuring your boiler is serviced once a year is the absolute bare minimum – you can’t afford to do any less.

You should ensure your specialist is Gas Safe registered do some digging online. For example, see what other customers are saying on Google Reviews and Yelp, and ask around friends and family for their recommendations.

Check your engineer

WHICH used hidden cameras to investigate if boiler engineers are carrying out dangerous gas work. They secretly recorded 10 engineers servicing a boiler, six from major brands – AA, British Gas, Corgi, Home serve, Scottish Power and SSE – and four from independents. The results were very poor; seven engineers failed to carry out the minimum legal checks, four didn’t fix the gas pressure that WHICH deliberately set too high, and one engineer even fabricated test results on their paperwork. Furthermore, not a single engineer fully followed the boiler manufacturer’s service instructions.

You can see if your engineer is up to scratch by knowing what checks your boiler needs; read the manual for your boiler to see what the manufacturer recommends, then you can ensure your specialist abides by these recommendations.

Watch your engineer while they service your boiler and check they are servicing everything they should be. You can find basic boiler servicing checklists online, so you can ensure your engineer has looked at general boiler fundamentals, and ensure they follow the recommendations you found in the manual. A good boiler check should last 30 minutes or more, so if this is not the case you should ask why. Following the check, ask for a written report and make sure it is filled out accurately.
