Top layer decides the hardness of engineered hardwood flooringby Saanvi Arora Wooden Flooring
The trend of using hardwood flooring is picking up in the Asian countries. This is especially true of engineered hardwood flooring, which is also known as solid hardwood flooring, a man-made processed version of hardwood flooring. It is produced by bonding separate layers of natural materials. The top layer is made from 100% natural wood and it is this layer that decides the level of harness of the structure. If Oak, maple and Hickory are used for the top layer then the structure is harder. If Birch, Cherry or Walnut is used as the top layer then the structure is softer.
The number of layers can vary between three and twelve. Timber is used to a large extent to produce this kind of structure. The final product is layered on top with the ‘wear layer’ hardwood lamella with the help of glue and pressure-press technique. Wear layer makes the structure sturdy and resemble the look of a natural hardwood flooring.
Engineered hardwood flooring in India available in three categories, i.e. Multi Ply, Three Ply and the High Density Fibre (HDF) board categories. Multi Ply and Three Ply are very reminiscent of their terms and are made with the help of different layer of wood. While the Three Ply structure includes layering of three layers of wood on top of each other; the Multi Ply engineered hardwood tile is produced by fusing together multiple layers wood on top of each other, with a veneer of real wood applied on the top to fortify the structure and make it durable and capable of handling heavy footfall. The HDF board consist of HDF board which is at the core of the structure. It is very sturdy and highly moisture resistant. It is also much cheaper as compared to the other two engineered hardwood flooring types.
