5. Half-Life 2

Did you really think we were going to forget about Valve’s sci-fi classic? Half-Life 2 introduced one of the sturdiest game engines of all time, surpassed its legendary predecessor in each manner, and completely raised the bar for narrative inside the fps genre. Notwithstanding being launched nearly ten years ago, half of-existence 2 continues to be an awesome looking recreation; a tremendous achievement for a 3-d title that went directly for realism. It additionally featured a extraordinary physics machine, which was utilised for item destruction and realism, as well as some innovative puzzles. Half-existence 2’s finest electricity became in how absolutely it managed to immerse players. Even though it was a completely linear campaign, players were absorbed into the organically told narrative, which changed into realised typically through in-recreation occasions and background exposition. Manage become given for everything of the sport, and not using a cutscenes that had been eliminated from the action, virtually allowing players to sense like they had been gordon freeman himself.

4. StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty

It’s hard not to include a game that has been referred to as the national sport of an entire country. StarCraft is a massive cultural phenomenon in South Korea, and still has a healthy competitive scene worldwide. StarCraft II: Wing of Liberty had a huge amount of expectation on its shoulders. How could Blizzard possibly hope to improve upon a game with such a colossal following? However, they somehow pulled it off, creating a game that kept the feel of the original StarCraft, while offering a completely different meta game. The online multiplayer, with its extensive league system and brilliant selection of custom modes, arguably makes up the meat of StarCraft II. However, it’s a complete package, and the single-player campaign is also terrific. If you’ve only got time to get into one online RTS, make it StarCraft II.

3. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows Of Amn

Baldur’s Gate. Two words that are enough to make any long-time RPG fan drool with nostalgia. Bioware’s Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, based on the Dungeons & Dragons rule set, is still fondly remembered as one of the best-loved PC games of this millennium. Though complex, Baldur’s Gate II was highly polished and easy to learn, making it simple for even younger gamers to get into. It continued the high standards of writing and characterisation seen in the first Baldur’s Gate, while introducing a larger, more ambitious adventure for players to sink their teeth into. Although Baldur’s Gate II is primarily known for its story, it also had a beautifully designed combat system. Rather than the long, drawn out battles that are typically seen in RPG games, Baldur’s Gate II’s encounters were fast and deadly, with an emphasis placed on planning and preparation in the moments leading up to the fight.

2. Portal

When the Orange Box launched, it was one of the best deals in gaming ever. It contained Half-Life 2, Episode 1 & 2, Team Fortress 2, and some little puzzle game that nobody paid much attention to before its release. That small puzzle game turned out to be Portal, possibly the biggest surprise hit in the history of gaming. Successful enough to spawn a full-featured sequel, Portal was capable of blowing the mind of anyone that played it with its brain-boggling interpretation of physics. The Portal Gun itself made for an incredibly original game mechanic, that resembled nothing that had been seen before. Portal is a great game based on the strength of its gameplay alone, but it was the snide, hilarious GLaDOS that thrust the game into the realm of popular culture. A true original, Portal is well deserving of its recognition as one of the best games of all time.

1. Deus Ex

The holy grail of freeform gameplay, Deus Ex’s blend of multiple genres and moody cyberpunk world made for possibly the greatest single-player campaign of all time. Imitated by many, but surpassed by none, Deus Ex really made the player feel like they were in control of how the story progressed. Deus Ex is a shooter. It’s an RPG. It’s a stealth game. It’s a platformer. It’s an action game. Depending on what sort of player you are, it has the potential to be any and all of those things. Thanks to the multitude of tools, weapons and augmentations available, Deus Ex gave players everything they needed to play through the various encounters in whatever way they wanted. As well as the individual gameplay encounters, there was also a sprawling, branching narrative, that somehow managed to bring everything to a satisfying conclusion regardless of what path you took or which main characters you killed.Don’t let the dated graphics (there are some fantastic player-created mods that help a lot) or poor voice acting scare you away. Deus Ex is the real deal, and is just about the most satisfying, compelling video game ever released, on any platform. source: http://oceangamez.com Do you disagree with any of the choices on this list?
