Top 3 Ways to Improve Rice Production

Rice is the second most important cereal crop and feeds more than half of the world's population.  Asia alone produces and consumes 90% of the world's rice. 

India is the second largest producer of rice and covers 1/4 of the cropped area. Out of 10,000 varieties of rice, 4,000 varieties are grown in India, hence, top rice exporters in India bank on its production for the entire year. 

However, traditional rice farming techniques are slowly becoming obsolete as they are not environmental friendly. Increased water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions are some of the major drawbacks that we are facing as a nation. It’s time to figure out the much-awaited solutions that increase the rice production and conserve soil, water and air. 


Direct Seeded Rice – DSR 

It’s an alternative rice growing method that involves spreading the seeds directly in the field by hand or machinery, which results in faster crop yield, less water retention and less labor work, as compared to transplantation method wherein seeds are first germinated in nursery and then transferred to flooded field. Rice exporter in India, are welcoming this method with open arms, and why not, their income levels are soaring as there is boost in productivity and the turn around time is also less. 

Using innovative techniques 

In the technologically advanced world that we live in, innovation is name of the game, no matter which sector we take into consideration. Experimenting with new technologies is one of the fastest ways to increase rice production multifold. The emergence of genome has turned the food industry upside down by superseding the traditional methods, thereby introducing a new era of crop improvement. 

Expanding rice varieties 

Top rice exporters in India are demanding expansion of rice varieties for all the valid reasons. New varieties must be introduced that can withstand extreme weather conditions as a result of global warming in different parts of India - Drought, flood, heat, cold, rains are some of the weather conditions where rice is expected to grow without any hindrance. 

Some farmers are skeptical about using new techniques, hence education and training becomes very important for them. Soil testing, pest management, plan protection, less labor are some areas that need immediate attention. More than 100 million tons of rice is consumed in India every year.  

It’s true that there is no other crop that is as plentiful in India as rice but increasing its productivity even further is need of the hour as Rice exporter in India

 are increasing and their demand needs to be catered well.
