Tips to Write Your First Novel

by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma

Writing for a living may seem to be an exciting idea but in reality, it is quite a difficult task. Although many people try to pursue a career in writing, most of them get stuck trying to complete their first novel. Once you finish your first novel, you can consider pursuing a career in writing. If you are stuck at completing your first novel, here are a few tips shared by renowned writers like Suhel Seth that will surely help you:

You Must Have a Designated Writing Time

Many authors keep some time aside every day when they do not concentrate on anything other than completing their novels. You can write for a couple of hours depending on the amount of free time you have or set a word count goal. Do not try to rush through the process as writing your first novel takes longer. By meeting your daily requirement, you can complete the entire task without becoming overwhelmed. Also, make sure that the writing space stays quiet during that time so that you can concentrate and do not get distracted.

Plan How You Want To Proceed

Before getting started, you must plan how you want to proceed with the task. Different authors have different writing methods. While some plan out and elaborate on each and every detail from the beginning, others put down all their ideas in one place, prepare the first draft first, and then make changes throughout the draft later. Irrespective of your approach, you should always elaborate your story idea properly.

Add Great Plot Twists

If you want the audience to stay hooked on your story, you have to add unexpected plot twists. This will ensure that the story does not get boring and takes a fresh new turn. However, do not try to use others’ ideas to give your story a plot twist. Try to exercise your brain and come up with interesting plot twists that help to build the characters and the story.

What Should Be Your Point Of View?

Depending on whether you choose to write in the first person, second person, or third person, it will have a huge impact on your storytelling style. Irrespective of the point of view you choose, try to maintain the same style throughout the story. However, you must ask yourself who is telling the story and to whom it is being told before deciding on the point of view.

A Good Introduction

Irrespective of whether you are writing a novel on crime, mystery, or horror, you have to write a great introduction to get your audience hooked. If you fail to grab the attention of the reader in the beginning, he or she might lose interest and not complete the story.
