Tips To Take Care Of Your Leather Sofa

by IV S. Consultant

If you are planning to get home a leather sofa, you have made the right choice. Leather is durable and does not require heavy maintenance. It is also a sophisticated and elegant choice for your living room. However, there are some steps you should take to keep your sofa clean and long-lasting.

One basic step, and it’s common-sensical to do so, is to never let a stain get set. Clear any spill immediately such as water or juice so that the area doesn’t get discoloured. Use a dry cloth that is soft so that the spill gets absorbed.

However, different spills and stains need different treatments. If it is a greasy stain, using a wet cloth or water will only make it worse.

If it’s an oil spill, you should quickly blot with a microfibre cloth. Then, sprinkle the stain with talcum powder or cornstarch. Let the powder stay on the stain overnight. The stain would have disappeared in the morning.

Spillages should always be blotted and not wiped because the stain gets further embedded into the leather.

For general maintenance, you can vacuum with a soft-bristled brush and also wipe the furniture with a clean cloth.

Don’t place your leather sofa close to a heat source like a fireplace or a heater/radiator. Also, don’t put it out in the sunlight because it could cause discolouration and cracking of the leather.

Don’t use do-it-yourself solutions or remedies on your leather sofa.

In case of severe spills, seek professional help rather than try and handle it on your own.

Cleaning agent: Which one works well?

Avoid using strong detergents or bleaches when you are cleaning your leather upholstery. Also, don’t use soaps or oils that are no meant to clean leather.

Leather upholstery needs constant conditioning and nourishing; you could get experts to handle this aspect from time to time. You could also use a good leather conditioner available in the market. However, ensure that you read the label carefully to check the composition of the conditioner. You could also test the conditioner one some other patch or hidden corner to check for any kind of discolouration. You can use the conditioner once in six months or a year.

Now that you know all about keeping leather furniture or sofa in fine form, go ahead buy one and add some timeless elegance to your interiors.
