Image Just as there are many people who have addictions to alcohol, tobacco, and/or drugs. There are just as many people who are addicted to anger, resentment, hatred, and inappropriate sexual behaviors. Sober living is helpful in overcoming co-occurring disorders, bad habits, personal problems, and fears by allowing you enough support and time sober, so that you can make an impactful change in your life. Sober living is about allowing yourself to be everything you were intended to be and living in an environment that helps you to control your actions, your words, and your life, and encourages you to make better choices so that you can better yourself as a person.

Sober living houses are established all across the United States as places where people who are recovering from an addiction can go to live until they are confident that they can return to the world a functioning, sober individual. These houses are safe places where people can live free of drugs and alcohol, able to easier resist the daily temptations to use these substances. Sober living houses are refuges for the newly sober individuals.

Some people say getting sober is the hard part, but actually staying sober each day is the real struggle for many. The following tips were compiled in hopes that they will help you find the strength to stay sober, no matter what life decides to throw at you.

1. A change of attitude will have to occur inside you. You have to develop a determination so that you do not fall prey to the temptations of the world and your old habit of choice.

2. Do not try to hang out in the same places you hung out when you were acting on your addiction. You are going to have to avoid bars if you are recovering from alcohol abuse, and if you are recovering from drug abuse you cannot go to the places where you once went to score a high.

3. You may need to establish a whole new circle of friends. You have to choose to surround yourself with people who are not substance abusers and avoid those who will assist or trigger you to use. We often have good intentions, thinking we can help old friends to gain sobriety, but you must remember that this is a personal journey, and you need to abstain from interacting with addicts who are not sober, and find people who will help you to maintain sobriety long-term.

4. Join a program like Celebrate Recovery and stick with it. In these twelve step programs you learn what tools you will need to maintain sobriety. You get to meet with others who are trying to maintain sobriety. You get to establish accountability partners so you do not stray from your new path. Recovery programs help to ground you and keep you grounded.

5. Eat healthy and start getting your body healthy. You need to get off of the couch and get physically active at least thirty minutes each day. Make better food choices and reduce the amount of sugar and processed food you consume. The healthier your body is the more likely you will resist a return to your old ways as a healthy and body mind will allow you to make better choices, feel happier, and more positive naturally.

6. Talk to other people about what you have been through. Do not hang your head in shame and do not hide from your addiction. Your addiction is not what defines you and feelings of blame and guilt will not help in your recovery.
