Tips for Wood Fence Installation

by Kevin Smith Author

Make Sure to Prepare Properly

There’s a lot more to installing a fence then just putting it together. There could be lines in the ground that need to be avoided or property lines that need to be considered. To deal with these sorts of things its best to check with the proper authorities or the neighbor. It shouldn’t be too hard to check these things, but it needs to be done before wood fence installation in Tampa, FL.

Know Where All of the Utility Lines Are

One of those things to check up on before starting is to check to see where all of the utility lines are. It wouldn’t be any good to start building the fence and discover the lines while installing the fence. This could cause some fines and just be inconvenient altogether. It’s best to check with the proper authorities to avoid problems later.

Determine the Needs of the Fence

Fences can be used for a few things, like going around a pool or just trying to mark the property. Different fences may be better for certain things, like pool fences may have to fit some height requirements and have a self-closing gate. But a fence that’s just for something small, like a garden, it probably won’t have to fill those requirements.

Choose a Style

When choosing what style of fence is needed, there are still some qualifications to consider. Someone who wants to keep their kids or dogs in the yard will want a taller fence with small gaps, to prevent an easy escape. Although these things aren’t required, they’re still good to think about.

Choose the Wood

Another selection is the wood for the fence. There are a few different kinds of wood that are often used for fences. The first is pine. It’s a relatively inexpensive wood that does have a shorter lifespan than the other options. The next wood is spruce. It still isn’t extremely expensive and lasts a few years longer than pine. The last is cedar. Cedar lasts much longer than the other wood options.

Make Sure to Have All of the Right Tools

Before getting to the actual installation, make sure to have all of the right tools. Not everyone would need the exact same tools for their fence, but most will need many of the same things. Pretty much everyone would need the basic tools like screwdrivers or wrenches, but others would need tools like levels or post hole diggers. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to do some research on what you might need.

Don't Forget about Elevation

Some yards may have some hills or other elevation to deal with. It may be necessary to step the fence, which can be tricky. If this seems like too difficult a task, it wouldn’t be terrible to call in some professional help. If not make sure to be careful with each section of the fence.

Mark Everything Carefully

A good way to start installing the fence is to mark where everything should go beforehand. This can avoid any confusion later and help know what would be coming next. This can be especially helpful when dealing with elevation. There’s no need to worry about the next step when everything is already marked off.

Don't Go into the Neighbors' Property

When marking everything off make sure to be aware of where the neighbor’s property begins. They wouldn’t be too happy if their neighbor started building a fence on their side of the property. Before starting the wood fence installation in Tampa, Fl, it would be a good idea to mark where their property line is and start working from there.
