Tips for Upgrading Your Bathroom
by Kevin Smith AuthorDesigners and contractors will tell you that other than
kitchens, bathrooms cost the most to remodel or renovate and one of two places
in a home that people most want to redo. It’s also one of the areas where
you’ll get the greatest return on investment – in some cases more than 60
percent when appraising your home.
You should have a sense of what you want your new bathroom
to look like. Save pictures of bathrooms that you’ve seen in magazines or on
websites that are providing inspiration for you. This will give you something
to aim for. But unless you have a background in construction or interior
design, you may need to hire the pros to do the actual work when upgrading your
bathroom. Where do you begin to find a bathroom designer in San Francisco, CA?
Narrow Your Search
As with most anything, ask people you know if they know of
anyone skilled in doing bathroom renovations. If yes, you’ve got a jump start
on your search; but if no, you will have to begin like most others: by
searching the Internet and shopping around.
Visit sites like Angie’s List or HomeAdvisor.com to get your
Internet search started. Then spread out to other designers using keywords to
narrow your search for designers in your community and surrounding area.
What to Ask
Look for sites that have examples of their work displayed
and for companies or individuals who have a lot of experience in bathroom
design.
Ask for referrals/references. Then call those people to ask
what work they had done, whether it was done professionally, on time and on
budget. Would they hire them again?
Ask your municipality if they could recommend any specific
designers.
If you have no idea at all what you want, but know you want
a change, do they offer a complete design architecture service that you can
then pick from a few different designs?
Ask for a free estimate so they can understand the scope of
the project and factor in any unusual things that may increase the cost a bit.
And get everything in writing, including a start and completion date.
Check with the Better Business Bureau and other
rating/review sites to see if people are satisfied with a company’s work, or if
there are unresolved complaints.
Are they licensed, insured and bonded? Get copies of those
things before they start the work.
Will they do the work themselves, or need to hire
subcontractors? If the latter, who covers those people from an insurance
standpoint and oversees their work?
Does your municipality require a building permit and, if so,
will they get the permit and add it into the cost; or do you need to obtain it?
What kind of guarantee do they provide for customer
satisfaction? Is there a warranty on the products they’re installing (faucets,
fixtures, flooring, shower or tub, etc.)?
Will they clean up their mess at the end of each workday,
and haul away material they’re tearing out?
Getting the answers to these questions when hiring a bathroom designer in San Francisco, CA,
will help ensure a professional job and a new design that makes your new
bathroom feel like a spa.
