Times When Bone Marrow Transplant Becomes a Life Saver

by Rohan Sinha Author
Bone marrow is one of those things in the human body which is crucial for existence. It is the source of three very important things: white blood cells, white blood cells and platelets and each of these are very important in keeping the human body fit and functioning.

What Happens When There Is A Problem With Your Bone Marrow?

Red blood cells that are produced by bone marrow are necessary for the body to receive oxygen. For the lack of oxygen serious problems can arise not the least of which is death! Low blood oxygen can lead to shortness in breathing, headaches and many other problems which need immediate medical attention failing which the patient may die. White blood cells make the body’s defence mechanism without which the body will soon be vulnerable to serious diseases and with nothing to protect it against any of that, the patient will succumb. Lastly, bone marrow produces platelets which prevent bleeding. Without platelets a simple cut can take several days to heal.

The three bone marrow products that we have mentioned thus far are each very important and without them living healthy life is impossible, hence bone marrow transplant is the best treatment option to get rid of all symptoms manifested by the lack of healthy bone marrow cells.

What causes bone marrow problem?

Bone marrow problem happens because of two reasons primarily: inherited or acquired. The first may be caused by faulty genetics. The second one however is more common. One of the most effective of cancer treatment is chemotherapy and it is known to kill cancer cells along with good cells along with stem cells in the marrow. The normal process is to reintroduce stem cells back in the body when the chemo process is done.

How bone marrow transplant is done?

The complexities associated with bone marrow transplant are such that transplanting marrow isn’t easy. One of the following three ways:

Autologous Transplant: Since chemo is the reason why bone marrow unhealthy, doctors remove it before the chemo process and then reuse that later when chemo is done. In this process you don’t need a donor; your own bone marrow is used. Generally this brings down the Cost of bone marrow transplant substantially but for information on it you can talk to your doctor and find out more about it.

Allogeneic Transplant: If for some reason the first method doesn’t work and your own marrow cells cannot be frozen and used later, the cells are taken from a donor and the process is called allogeneic transplant. Donors of similar genetic makeup are chosen for the purpose, which means the patients siblings, children or parents are perfect candidates.
