TikTok future in the US: Is the ban off the table?

by Alicia Brown Application Developer

The hype of the TikTok ban in the USA is now set to die down. The past few months showed the government’s firm stance on the app’s ban. Even when the federal judge blocked the order, the United States Department of Commerce still wanted to defend the ban. But the news is fading down with the last government.

Why Ban, in the first place?

The debate of TikTok being a security threat started a while back and became significant news in the whole region. The government was worried that TikTok parent company ByteDance is sharing users’ private data with the Chinese communist government. The parent company denied all the allegations, but the government was stuck on this. As a result, TikTok was ordered to be banned in the states on the 12th of November.

What happened to the ban?

It’s 19th November, a week after the ban was supposed to take place. But the news and all the anticipation has died down. The news just fizzled out and the elections took the headlines. But what happened here? Apparently, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance made a deal with American firms Oracle and Walmart. The deal took the pressure off of ByteDance and satisfied all the US government concerns. Considering this news, it is clear that the ban was not about the “security threat” at all. The whole tension was just made up to show off some business acumen by the president, Donald Trump.

All good now?

The US judge halted the app ban, but President Trump is still trying to ban the Chinese app “WeChat”- a messaging and payments app that Chinese Americans use to conduct business and stay in contact with their loved ones back home.

It appears that the whole ban shenanigans are dying for good now as the Trump administration is to leave office by the end of next month for the new Biden administration. It is safe to say that the TikTok and WeChat ban will not be on the new administration’s priority list. For now, the users can relax and keep creating beautiful and fun content on the app for us to enjoy. Happy TikTok-ing.
