Nothing is quite as irksome as the boning or underwire of your bra digging into your skin. Such discomfort is usually a sign that you’re wearing the wrong size bra. Next time you’re out shopping for bras, arm yourself with the right knowledge to ensure that you pick the right fit. The following three points are a good starting point for choosing the appropriate size.

Learn the Bra Sizing System and Shop with Confidence

Too many women wear bras that are too small. Often, an attendant at the bra store will tell you that you’re a 34 DD, for example, yet you’re certain that you’re bigger. It’s important to keep in mind that most stores are interested in driving sales and may not take time to help you to find the right brasize for you.

The steps to determining your bra size are as follows. Take off your top and, with your bra still on, have someone take the smallest measurement of your lower bust (where the band rests) —this is your band size. Round off the measurement to the nearest even number. Thereafter, take the measurement of the fullest part of your bust and, for every inch above the band size, move forward one letter, starting with “A”. This is your cup size.

Use the above sizes (e.g., 36 E)at bra stores and bra fittings, and disregard store attendants that are adamant about selling you a smaller sized bra because it is the only one that is available.

Consider ‘Sister Sizes’

When a bra your size is unavailable, consider trying a ‘sister size’. Part of the bra band-length is as a result of the cup size, meaning a 36 A or 32 C bra might fit you if you’re a 34 B. You can find a sister size by going one cup-size down and one band-size up — or by going one cup-size up and one band-size down.

Getting the Right Fit

The bra’s midsection should be flush with your sternum. Adjust your shoulder straps in a way that allows you to fit two fingers between the strap and your shoulders.

Similarly, your finger should fit under the back band, which should be parallel to the ground and just touch your shoulder blades at the bottom. The bra band should fit on almost all the clasps and not just the tightest one, otherwise it will be too loose once it stretches out.

Finally, your breasts should fit securely in the bra with no spillover under or over the cups and no gaping space at the top.
